Sorry to hear that the map is not working properly for you zero. Most probably what is wrong is that this is my first google maps application so I'm not doing everything properly in that way that all browser/OS combinations work.

Unfortunately as this is a hobby project for me, the possibility for me to test on different platforms is very limited.

I have now added possibility to compare two routes in the maps, i.e. Compare Exmeromotu & PetrM

Thanks Aaron for your comments. So far I plan to continue doing just hourly updates for even short races. However, I have stored also the full routes (traces.xml) from the boats, so I think I can reproduce the exact tracks of the boats later.

I also added the race start point to the tracks so that they start from the same point.

The next step is probably add some indicator of time to the routes, so that one can compare where the boats were at a given time. Perhaps some other data there too.

PS. Now the urls don't have extensions. The .map-extension was just something I put there when started sketching the feature.
This is positively BRILLIANT!!!!

SOL MUST have one of the most tech-savvy communities anywhere. There are NO other sailing-sims with this level of sophistication.

Terrific Job!!
Well Done.

hmm this is marvellous!!! I just took your PetrM vs Exmer link and swapped out Exmer for me and... boy can I see where I went wrong!!

As I don't spend much time thinking about my SOLing (a bit too much else to to on-site as well is real-life!) things probably won't change but it will be invaluable for those who do study their performance.

Thanks for sharing your "hobby" with us!!

:-D
I have now added markers for boat positions for every 6 and 24 hours to help comparison in the maps.

I'll probably have to adjust the marker periods to be shorter for the shorter races though.
Development goes on with my site. The next addition is more detailed boat routes for the maps. These can be accessed from the map views with the link "Show detailed track".

For some reason the routes I have stored for the boats don't exactly match the hourly positions, so the progress markers might be a bit off from the routes in the detailed view. Hopefully this doesn't cause too much confusion.

The detailed route map loading is quite slow, especially for the SWR leg. I'm planning to add there some caching to hopefully get it a bit faster. As it is quite slow, whenever you switch a boat in the map view, it reverts to the faster hourly positions.
It just occurred to me while watching todays SWR Leg4 practice racing that the tools I have built for this site could quite easily be used for practice race scoring as well.

Quick sketch about how I thought this would work, without actually really knowing how practice races go (never participated in one) so I can be totally wrong:

1. A race course is set up, the race admin creates the race. The marks can probably be read from sailonline.org data automatically. Start time should be specified for the race.

2. Before the start the admin or the sailors themselves would add the participating boats to the race.

3. Due to the nature of the short races, during the race the boat positions would be fetched every minute or so. Only the participating boats data would be saved though so updating this often would hopefully not stress my server too much.

4. As the site would know the route (the waypoints) it could calculate the leaderboard during the race which could be displayed in real time during the race.

5. Race finish times could also be determined and displayed automatically.

6. Only problem is that the site would not know if a boat has rounded a mark or not. I guess some logic could be developed to handle this but for informal races I suppose it would be sufficient for the race admin or the boats themselves just marking themselves rounded on the site.

If people (especially the people organizing the practice races) think this would be useful, I might create something like this. However, if people decide that things are good how they are now (I guess the current informality can be good thing) I'm fine with that as well. This is just a thought.

If this is considered to be a good idea, I suggest that the way it could be done is discussed in a separate thread as it would be a separate utility from my sollog site.
I have finally written some documentation for this site in the blog which I recently started:

http://blog.sol.hmm.iki.fi/2012/12/short-introduction-to-sollog.html
Would it not be easier and simpler to use the existing race format and programming, with "choose-a-boat", starts, turn marks, mark notification, race order, and finish order---but let the race run for only three hours? Almost always the "practice races" run on the days prior to the start of the actual race, when little or no server attention needs to be paid to those boats which are merely "pleasure sailing" the actual course for the coming real race. No additional programming would be needed, except for the addition of the three hour 'cut-off' time.

p.s. The weather information would need to cover only a very small area, for a very short period of time, thus reducing server load. There have rarely ever been more than 20 participants in these 'round-the-buoys' "practice races".

If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.

Beketov by Balloon 2026 - In Siberia

Way-back-when France and England, and Spain as well, were squabbling about who should control what of North America, only to lose the most of it to their own insurging colonists, their eastern European neighbour empire, Russia, was quietly assimilating vast, thinly nomadically populated territory of its own – Siberia! Amongst the many explorers and adventurers that served Russia so well in these conquests was the Cossack hetman Pyotr Beketov. Let’s pretend we’re he and eschewing horseback, let’s travel by balloon from Yekaterinberg to Krasnoyarsk – just a short 2000km (1100nm) section of the Trans-Siberian Express’ 9289km!

West Papua to Oregon 2026

Our next race in our Ocean Championships is the first of a series of great natural migrations we will track in 2026. The leatherback turtle is the most widely distributed marine reptile on planet Earth, and chooses to breed in warm tropical waters, but prefers to forage in more temperate habitats, travelling thousands and thousands of miles effortlessly annually to maintain this way of life. Our race will follow one of the typical trips of this turtle, from breeding grounds in the seas off West Papua to the coast of Oregon. It’s only 5900nm, so to keep up, but in comfort, we’ll follow in our Gunboat 90.

Race to Up Helly Aa 2026

A-OI!!! The fiery spirit of Shetland’s legendary Up Helly Aa returns, and Sailonline’s annual race to Lerwick is once again upon us. Covering 383 nautical miles from Aberdeen, SOLers will tackle winter waters steeped in Viking tradition. This year, we race the classic Frers 33, a proven cruiser-racer born from the golden era of offshore racing and still a sturdy performer both on the virtual and real water. Can you master the course and reach Lerwick in time for the flames?

SAILING NOTE: Gruney may be approached from any direction but must be passed for rounding purposes as indicated on the chart.

Red Eye - Hobart Convict Run 2026

Back in 2010, one of our SOLers of the first hour, AUS_Scott76, came up with this ‘Convict Run’ out from Hobart, past Cape Raoul and the penal colony of Port Arthur, round Tasman Island, up and back down the east coast of Tasmania, to finish with a tight technical run – so Scott called it – up the picturesque D'entrecasteaux Channel, home to Hobart once again. It’s 250nm, ideal for a bit of ‘Red Eye’ in comfortable Finngulf 43’s, and if the original idea was to pick up some convicts on the way for a bit of R&R and sea air, you may always drop’m back before returning to Hobart!

New Ice Age 2026 - Longyearbyen to Browerville

Although we have by no means exhausted the possibilities of ice boating on lakes at high latitudes or high altitudes, it was noticeable that as our 2025 Series progressed, there were calls from time to time for longer-distance challenges, and so in response to these calls we will pretend that global warming has reversed and as a result the coastal waters of Antarctica and Russia and Canada have fully (and smoothly!) frozen over offering us the possibility of a 4-race New Ice Age series in our trusted no-PL DN machines. Our first leg takes us 2600nm from Svalbard’s Longyearbyen east to North Alaska’s Browerville. You’ll be a few days on the ice, so dress warmly and take some provisions; go!
