The course posted as the Round White Island race is not around White Island, which is way south in the Bay of Plenty. If it's not too late to post the correct course, I suggest a name change.

IRL the RAYC is keeping the name.

It's just that the container ship RENA went aground on a rock, leaking oil and losing containers a month ago, and a major portion of the sea area was CLOSED.

Happy to say that a lot of the heavy oil has been pumped off (300 tones left) and containers are being lifted off now. However only 18 of the 90+ containers washed overboard have been found and/or recovered.

So for safety sake, the yacht race is going north to avoid the area, not south through a dangerous zone.

Possibly consider this as Course 2 option, rather than the original Course that goes around White Island.

The Poor Knights Group is a marvellous marine reserve with excellent diving and has a powerful lighhouse on the northern tip, but this is almost obscured when approaching from the south.

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!
