I know very well the F18 boats. I have raced on them many times (and won races :-). It does not take 2 minutes to be at 100% after starting or jibing !
Here it takes hours !!
Thanks

Experienced the same things, but I'm soooo happy to have this race in SOL!

But I don't think that performance drop is very unreal. After tacking/gybing we have to build up the flow (in sails and along the daggerboards/rudders) and pressure again. I think 1 to 2 minutes is pretty realistic, taking in account the preparation before the tack/gybe.

Now that I tried a test run, in 18 kts of wind, I see your point... Takes a very long time to get back to 100%... hmmm

If you're still in control, you're not going fast enough.
I think we just have to treat it as a correction factor for the speed of the boats overall. This race should not have too many unnecessary tacks, and everyone will make more or less the same turns. Consider the perf hit to be congestion at the marks or a particularly bad stretch of surf! ;-)
I'm very ok with it, and I presume perf.loss will be much less radical in lighter airs. If we take into account the behaviour of these boats in heavy winds/choppy waters, I think an overall performance of >90% is pretty good.

Cheers

Yup - agree completely! For those not in on the race planning for this one - our polar is straight out of Jakob's IMSYC VPP with pretty major modifications to try to sneak a multihull through.

The limiting factors for multihulls are righting and pithing moments. The numbers are mathematically pure steady state and don't take into account waves, gusts, human reflexes or trying desperately to not get washed off a multi doing 20+knots through surf!

10-15% off the top in those conditions is perfectly fair, and if you mess up at a mark and have to throw a couple of extra manoevers in I bet you'd lose a whole lot more IRL in a fleet this size! Total mayhem! haha

The practice race today was fun to watch. These are *fast* boats, and you got a real feel for that watching the pixels creep around the course!

Outstanding Disappointment
The perf loss was nothing compared to being on a pretty good timed run and the entire SOL server goes "toes up"... was trying to beat Chila's time! ". No commands, no weather, nuthin'!! Could not get into the Neufie race either. Reset everything, cleared the caches and rebooted and still nothing. By now, I'm almost to Rotterdam "but making good time!"

Aarrgghh!

Have tried everything I know. Can not get into any races. Please mark me as "retired" or DNS for all until further notice.
This HAS to be something on my end and NOT a SOL problem as I can still post to the Forum.

Will keep trying but if I can't get it fixed... it was fun while it lasted. Best to all and fair winds.

Aarrgghh!
SP
You can load the race but no weather/fleet etc shoes up?

I *think* that's the symptom we had with DNS loss. This is the fix that saved North America last time around - good luck!!!:

Hard to say how localised this is, but it looks like Ottawa at least is having trouble finding SOL again. The same fix as last time works - on windows machines:

Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

there should be a file there called "hosts" with NO extension

right click it and open-with ... notepad

add these two lines:

62.181.230.173 race.sailport.se
62.181.230.171 www.sailonline.org

restart

It's a good idea to remove these two lines once they are no longer needed, which can be done by adding # to the beginning of each line:

# 62.181.230.173 race.sailport.se
# 62.181.230.171 www.sailonline.org
76T - I have emailed that on to ShamPir in case he doesn't check back for a while.

I also said:

"A couple of times I have had issues with the Flash client not loading for me one thing has nearly always fixed it for me, and that is checking that my Flash version is up to date. Its very simple to do - just right-click on the (empty) SOL game screen and following the instructions if a newer version of Flash is offered."

just in case that might also help!!

Hopefully ShamPir will be back soon!

Withdrawal Averted!!!
Thanks 76 and RC! I messed around with everything and it looks like it popped back on it's own! I'll try to save the instruction if this disaster should ever befall me again.
I was ready to go to plan "B"....just pick up and move to Sailport's lobby!

Thanks again and see you in Texel!

Haida Gwaii 2024

We will end the second quarter of the ARCH competition with a 390nm race around the Haida Gwaii islands (literally "Islands of the Haida people"), also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. This is an archipelago located on the northern Pacific coast of Canada. In SOL, we last raced on this route in 2012 and few people remember what happened there. Prepare your Riptide 50 well, it's going to be a lot of fun.

Newport Bermuda Race 2024

The 636-mile biennial Newport Bermuda Race is one of the oldest regularly scheduled ocean races, and with the Fastnet Race and the Sydney to Hobart Race, it is one of the three great classic races of the yachting world. Founded in 1906, this 53rd running of the Bermuda Race can again also be participated in online.
Entries are invited for one of the four divisions:
Double-Handed Division:
Jeanneau Sun Fast 3600
St. David's Lighthouse Division:
Santa Cruz 52
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division:
Judel Vrolijk 62
Finisterre Division:
Riptide 50
Details for each yacht are available in the ‘Particulars’ links below. As in real life, you can only sail one boat in one division, so choose your virtual yacht carefully, and because of the unusual (for SOL) 4-division nature of the event, please note results will not count towards any Sailonline rankings.
