Greetings, as you might have heard we are looking too run the Volvo Ocean Race on SOL as well.

But with such a big race there are some things too work out. We like too hear your ideas.

- Scoring sytem for a overall ranking, how too keep the overall standings exciting.

Let us know what you come up with.
I am a ex-admin of SOL who joins in from time to time.
Here's an idea to get the discussion started.

How about boubble score system.
1 same score system as in real race for same number of boats. Boats finish after last real boat gets points as last boat in real race.

2 SYC ranking points as usual.
Possibly having a series of timing sectors where by the yacht that has the fastest time through each different sector gains points. Effectively a series of sprint sectors within the main race.

So a leg or overall "winner", may not necessarily be "first on line" but may even be 10th but had 2,3, or 5 sectors where in they sailed very fast and thus scored really well. (Like F1 car racing)

A type of performance handicapping, as all boats are identical.

So the virtual winner is the the boat that does well, but not necessarily first on line (from some lucky wind shift), but also sailed very VERY well in the different sprint sectors.

So both "First on line" AND "BEST PERFORMING" leg/overall winners are recognised.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
Why not do all the "Round the World" races using the original courses.

e.g. First Whitbread was Portsmouth -> Capetown -> Sydney -> Rio de Janerio -> Portsmorth.

When that race is finished, and we all have recovered, then the next will be the 2ns race course that went to Auckland, not Sydney.

but then I am biased, having "been there, done that".

Cheers

why such a complicated scoring system and extra timings... The idea was to keep the program simple, so must the scoring be. Just the place you have on the finish for every leg. the one with the most won legs wins overall.

You can make it more fun for others to add classes, like best newbie, etc. But overal winning must be a simple system.
But it must start at the same time with the same weather and the same route. Then it is the best.

For vintage purpose you can sail a
WHITBREAD ROUND THE WORLD RACE with the original course

That would be really great to compare SOL to IRL in real time, both on the TV/Media news and on SOL.

They only have 8 boats but SOL has over 400 registered for SYCC Leg 2. Interesting numbers!

Dear sailors,
We have two of the biggest offshore events. The SOL community do not has race for these real events.
As for the notice of race, we must follow the real documents.
