Hi SOLers...Having read the Corinthian Class threads, it has prompted a question about race design in SOL. First, I LOVE the idea of sailing in the blind, though my limitied IRL experience was that we could always keep track of local competition within a 12-24nm radar window.

In many ocean legs like GCLeg2 that we are on, the leg lines go start>>finish as there are no marks to round. This makes the rankings complete rubbish until probably the final 48-72 hrs of sailing (if that). Would it be possible to place "marks" on obvious land promontories or capes that obviously can only be rounded in one fashion? This would provide a slightly more realistic accounting of how the fleet stacks up over the course of the race. It took me a while to figure out that being in the "lead" was probably a bad thing-- unless the Big Boys were nearby!!

I have been trying to design some races and this aspect was something I have run into.

Comments welcome.
William
Surely the very point of the Corinthian experience is that you just sail your own boat, un-influenced by others? I am not doing the Cor...thing. But...I do not use a router, I do not copy others (I much prefer to make my own mistakes)I do not concern myself with other boats, except for those close to mine, when I do try to do better than them.
As to the ranking system---it obviously relates ONLY to distance from destination. What more could you possibly need?
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
It's nice that SOL'S IMOCA Global Challenge 2011 - Leg 2 is missing in the rankings. The start collided with my ski trip (as the finish of Leg 1).
But I wonder why SOL takes so much care of me ;)

ciao
Bernd

Tobruk to Iskenderun 2026

Welcome to the fourth of our nine races across the length and breadth of the Magical Mediterranean Sea, and the second that is not in partnership with a real-life event, this time for good reason, which we won’t get into here. From Tobruk to Iskenderun it’s 670nm in length, with the added complication that the island of Cyprus will be in your way. Hoping, possibly forlornly, for plenty of downwind sailing, we’ll take the Lagoon 55 for the voyage!

Tasmania to Kamchatka 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. Tasmania to Kamchatka, part of our Ocean Championship and also the third leg of the ROW (Round the Old World) series. Be aware of the obstacles on the way, likely to split the fleet. It's like X:mas to X:mas, crossing the same waters, navigating the same archipelagos. This second race of OCQ2 2026 will be sailed in our revised 'version 2' Imoca 60 Foil. Race #2031
