Hi addicts ;)

At New Years Eve 2010 the BWR starts, a twohanded nonstop round the world trip with Open 60. The entry of many of the top guns of the shorthand ocean racing guys like Dick, Peyron, Alex Thomson, Dee Caffari, Domenique Wavre makes this second edition to a highlight of the ocean race calendar. BlaBlaBla :))

My question to the SolGodess/SolGods: shall we or shall we not?

Pro:
A race with huge media coverage
A race were we can compete against IRL racing
A long term experience, less maintaince for competitors

Con:
long term dedication of the server for just one race.

Any other ideas about it?

cheers

Stu/Berth
I think this would be fabulous... solo sailors IRL while we are solo SOLers!!

There are 11 of 15 entries confirmed in the IRL race, according to the website.

Are there different boat-types being used? If more than one then if SOL can source the polars we too can offer a choice of boat-types which would make it an even more fun competition!!

I don't see that running this would necessarily rule out other ocean races for its duration but it would, obviously, be a question of managing server capacity.

Nice idea Stuart!!

:-)

There is only one type of boats: Open 60, the crown of the shorthand circus. Very fast downhill and challenging. The duration for the fastest ist around 80 days.

In December there is planned a short circuit of races around Barcelona with theses boats. We could probably have a kinda appetizer as well.

I don't have any information about the course except Barcelona-Barcelona - for example ice gates. We will see and wait, what they are publishing.

There is a german entry, a very young, very communicative guy. I could post in his blog, so SOL could get a bit more popular by german sailors.

Once again around, let's do that!

The BRW (on LiveSkipper) was what got me hooked on virtual sail racing (Thanks to Cruzist). I'd be in for another go at it. I think the SOL format would be way better for this type of race.

Perhaps in order to minimize server load the race could be run with only one weather update a day. This would also be easier on the sailors only having to spend time once a day (except when dealing with STOG, with close gate crossings, and the New Zealand mark, etc).

Might need to check if LiveSkipper has the name rights tied up to avoid another Fastnet deal.

Might need to check with the SOL Gods, Kalle, Jakob, and Eddie about the Huge map necessary and the dateline weather bug.
As many of you will have noticed from the SOL December Calendar there is an IMOCA 60 Global Challenge being run on SOL which happily coincides with the timing and routing of the publicised race.

Question - does anyone yet know where the ice gates will be located? The website simply mentions that they will be made known on 1 November!!! But I can't find them!!

Africa by Sea 2025 - Suez to Port Said

When Napoleon (briefly) occupied Egypt at the turn to the 19th C, he ordered his expedition’s Directeur des Ponts et Chaussées, Jacques-Marie Le Père, to evaluate the ancient, derelict, infilled course of a Ptolemaic canal connecting the Red Sea to the Nile via the Great Bitter Lake, versus a new canal to the Mediterranean directly. Neither were considered feasible – locks to climb a pauvre-surveyed 10m sea-level difference, or continuous dredging of the Nile, would both be equally financially prohibitive. Fifty years passed before the unlikeliness of Le Père’s survey finding was challenged and a French Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez obtained a 99-year concession from the Khedive of Egypt, Said Pasha, to construct and operate a canal from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, much against the will of the Ottoman Sultan, Abdulmecid I (the Pasha’s nominal overlord), and the wishes of the (Irish) British prime minister, Lord Palmerston. The year was 1859, the very number of this race (planning, dear boy, planning!), which, despite the canal’s double-super-tanker gauge and lack of locks, is strictly prohibited IRL. 85nm in Fareast 28Rs to complete your circumnavigation of Africa!

Red Eye - Frisian Isles Trophy 2025

For our final “Red Eye” race, we invite you to cross the Noord Zee to the Wadden Zee, where a 160nm course around a few sandy islands raced on SOL only once before in 2010 awaits you. We don’t have a replica of Erskine Childers’ Dulcibella in our boathouse, and in any case if we took her out, we might well contract more than one “Red Eye”, so instead we’ll race our very own riddle of the sands in Farr 400s!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
