Board » General Discussion » FinnGulf 43 Polar / Mumm 30

Attached are polars for Smo's FinnGulf 43, and also a Mumm 30 (was discussed at same time)

Maybe someone who knows the Mumms can help out with some interpretation? The polar shows a range where either the class-legal asymmetrical or the fractional spins are fastest, so we get a pretty dramatic "3-hump" polar in higher winds.

I think maybe for one-design racing you have to choose either/or between the masthead and assy before heading out? Is this true in mixed-fleet/handicap/offshore races as well?

Funky polar though.

I don't know the special Situation regarding Mumm 30, but in General in handicaped Races all Boat get a Handicap regarding their potential Speed, which may differ within one Class regarding different Equipment. Such as Genoa or Jib, Spinnaker or Gennaker, Masthead or 7/8.
If you do Classrankings inside the general Ranking, you probably will have two Classes, one with Spinnaker and one with Gennaker.
Good point Taz thanks. I guess since the Farr with either the assy or the masthead are considered level-class (one design) for class racing and most boats will likely sail class-legal sails in fleet races I was starting to confuse myself.

It looks like the majority of Farrs under ORC are rated carrying both class sails, which would give them an (illegal) advantage racing one-design, but opens up tactical options, make sail handling a bit easier, works as a spare etc in handicap racing...

Three hump polar it is. It's the fractional spin that's responsible anyways, so it's all a bit moot. :-)

From the Farr 30 Class Rules:

25.1 NUMBER OF SAILS ABOARD - unless otherwise prescribed by Sailing Instructions the number of sails carried aboard may be less than, but shall not exceed:
- 1 mainsail
- 3 jibs, one of which shall be the FARR 30 Class heavy weather jib (conforming to current ISAF Offshore Special Regulations)
- 4 spinnakers:
(1) Masthead symmetric - which shall be constructed from nylon cloth weighing no less than 40 grams/meter2 (polyester cloth is not permitted)
(1) Masthead symmetric - that shall be constructed from cloth weighing no less than 30 grams/meter2
(1) Masthead asymmetric - that shall be constructed from cloth weighing no less than 30 grams/meter2
(1) Fractional symmetric or asymmetric - that shall be constructed from cloth weighing no less than 40 grams/meter2
A storm trysail and/or a storm jib conforming to current ISAF Offshore Special Regulations may be carried in addition to class inventory. These do not require sail buttons.

So your polar is absolutely, positively...correct.
Hurray for 3 humps! (I'm talking about the polar...don't get any ideas!!) ;)
