Board » Flag Officers » Race proposals » Race Suggestion - Chiloe Challenge

For a very demanding race I suggest one rounding Chiloe Island in Chile.
Here every two years the "Chiloe Islands Regatta" is raced and yachts from everywhere in Chile an from others countries in South America, like Argentina and Peru, meet in this beautiful part of my country to race in the most fabulous landscapes and within the most extreme sea, wind and currents conditions.
Hope in the near future all SOL captains will be seen in such race.
All the best and fair winds to all.
Andy
Captain of the Hotu Matu'a (an real and virtual boat, by the way)

Hi Andres,

that sounds very interesting, specialy as there are very few Races in Chile on the SOL-Calender.

Can you make a .kmz File of the course and post it here or is there a webstie for that Race?
(you can find a .pdf with what is to do here:Google Earth Race Proposals
)

Regards
Hendrik aka Tazumaki

Andy / Hotumatua - this would be a wonderful race!! As Tazu says, would you be able to make a Google Earth file of the course?

If not, then you would need to provide some details of the race (start/course/finish - by name and preferably by coordinates, and also to nominate a boat-type that would be best. A list of boat-types already in SOL is in a sticky post at the top of the Race proposals Forum.

Is there any possibility that the race organisers would let us use the real race name? Do you have any contacts there?

If not, then maybe you can devise an alternative name for SOL to use :-)

Thanks RainbowChaser and Tazumaki. I'm already working in the kmz file. Unfortunately the name "Regata Islas de Chiloe" is a trademark and can't be used without permission of the owners, the Club Nautico Oceanico de Chile (Chilean Oceanic Nautic Club).
Maybe we can call the race "Chiloe Challenge". Don't sound bad, I believe.
Please forgive my bad english, I'm chilean and a self taught in that language.
As soon I finish the kmz file I'll post it to the community consideration.
All the best
Andy
Andy - your English is excellent!! Well done for teaching yourself :-)

Yeps - Chiloe Challenge is a good name.

If you need any help with the GE file, please just ask! I have made many now, but started by using the document that Tazu linked you to - if you go carefully through the document then the file does work!!

Look forward to seeing what you create :-)
OK SOLers. I have finished my kmz file with the race proposed. Is my first attemp to design a race and, of course, any suggestion, advice or criticism (in respectfully terms, of course) is welcomed.
I believe that the Seacart 30 is the most suitable boat for this race.
I hope you like it and in some time in the near future we meet in Chiloe Island to race.
Fair winds to all.
Andy

Andy - thank you for an excellently prepared GE file! It looks good to go and I will be setting it up in SOL shortly. If I have any queries I will post them here.

Otherwise once it is set up I will register the sol boat (as I have done for the Atlant'Iles challenge currently on the Homepage) and you and other SOLers can have a look at it and share any thoughts or suggestions.

Is there a best time of year for this race? I imagine the seas off Chile are always pretty difficult but SOLers do like good winds and, as you know, we often find windholes!!

:-)

Hi Rainbowchaser: Thanks for your kind words.
In fact, the "Regata Islas de Chiloe" took place in the summer of the southern hemisphere, in January.
Now, in winter, winds from the north are predominant in the pacific coast of the island and a cold and very rainy weather is usual down there. In the interior waters, nevertheless, the winds are very variables and there´s a lot of currents, so it's a challenge to sail is such conditions.
I believe that the real regatta could be raced in the winter season, however because is one of the Chiloe's most important touristic attractions of the year, many visitors goes to the Island to attend the regatta and that's why is raced in summer.
Thanks a lot
Andy
Hi Andy

I have started the setup in SOL and am pencilling the race in for October - will you be available then? The race cannot be run for the first time without its course designer in the fleet!!

:-)
Hi Rainbowchaser:
It will be my honor to be in the start line.
Thanks again and I hope that all SOLers will enjoy the race.
Fair winds to all.
Andy

Refeno Rally 2024

Although since 1986 this 300nm course from Recife, Brazil, to Fernando Noronha Island has been run many times IRL, we have only used this route twice in SOL. This time it will be the route of the last race in the ARCH 2024 classification.
Although the winner of the general classification can already be determined, the fight for the next places on the podium should be fierce. There are several contenders and Dofour34 have them at their disposal. Since we are starting in Vida_Maldita's home waters, he will give us a 30-minute handicap. Or maybe we should give it to him? 😊

The Beagle in the Azores 2024

And west the Beagle went one final time to round the Cape of Good Hope on May 31 1836. Ashore, Darwin met up with the Astronomer Royal, Herschel, who just happened to be in South Africa at the same time mapping the southern skies. After sounding out his many ideas on evolution and extinction with Herschel, the Beagle now sailed north, stopping briefly in St Helena, Ascension and Brazil, and the Cape Verdes again, to reach the Azores on September 19, 1836. Fitzroy and Darwin at this stage were in a hurry to get back to Britain, but online in 2024 we will stay a little longer to explore this final remote archipelago in our virtual Tall Ship Class B Beagle, 630nm round and about the islands, minding as always in these waters not to bump into any large cetaceans!
