Sailing by linux computerprograms is telling me that you can`t have fun anymore...

Actually, I have the same opinion about SailPlanner etc. used at SOL..

If SOL could accommodate different boats in the same race we could have a handicap system where the guys with routing software will get slower boats to compensate for the perfect sailing.

Or SOL could make the DC system easier to use for all players. For example, setting a TWA with the timescale scrolled forward for a DC will actually show the future speed and track on the map. Perhaps as dotted lines.

My opinion is that the magic of SOL and everyone's head scratching on making tactics will be lost with all sorts of tools calculating all sorts of stuff...

When i loose i blame myself or my indedission, if i have so many tools i will blame the program or whoever develops it... I too have respect for brain, because he does real navigation and data utilisation...

I am certain that bringing so many tools that will be out of our knowledge of what they actually do or how they do it will take the game to a different level, certainly will take away the fun part...

I have not been long in SOL, maybe longer than others and witnessed the first talks about router programs and what these new toys were doing... From then to now, judging by the attitude in the chat I think everything has been more serious about their presence in SOL, which is not bad, it's just not my cup of tea

I agree that SOL should be like RL in that your results should reflect the effort you put in so if Eddie is using advanced Unix tools to plan his course using his own router software, that is fine. The beauty of SOL is we are definately all sailing one design yachts so that is a great leveller. Your options are weather planning, course selection and sailing the best polar lines. We can all see where Brainaid is on the course and we have all seen how some guys try to stick to him like glue. Having different divisions (using routing software, newbies, etc) is open to abuse, a newbie division could be rorted with old hands registering under different yacht names. I think it is fantastic the amount of time and effort that Eddie puts back into SOL with his own site, polars, race notices, open discussions, etc and we all learn from his great contributions. So what if he is using SOL to develop and refine his own router program, one day we can buy a subscription! I subscribe to SP which I think is a great product and essential for long races and all serious racers in RL would be using router programs for long races.

Routing with Brains softaware and routing IRL is not the same thing.
IRL you have a weather forecast in the router and real wether around the boat. But here on SOL he have exactly the same weather in his router as in the game.

Yep fair point Niklas and IRL you have more feel for the next 24 - 48 hrs weather but router software comes into its own after that time.

Well each to his / her own, and I mean that sincerely. A couple of months ago I made the decision to not use any software outside of SOL- though I wasn't above a bit of advice (thanks Pete!)For me, it is simply more fun than using a router. This means in the current environment I have almost no chance of making a top 50 finish and have to be extremely on my game to make a top 100. But you know what? that's fine with me. It seems like I'm competing in a different "cruising" class and if I can catch a few hotshots- so much the better. Sol is one of the coolest, BEST MANNERED, environments on the net and I would caution about fragmenting it with different and ultimately unenforcable divisions. Yes, it's a competetive world out there (and in here) but I think we can all choose how we compete. For me it's personal best using the rules I generated for myself.

Yes, Niclas, that is correct. I do have the exact weather for the next 6 hours. I would love to have this a little more complicated, but that is a difficult to explain feature for the average user.

On the other hand: I do well on short distance, but I really fly off on long races. So there must be something else behind this than knowing the next 6 hours exactly. I believe I know the next 180 hours better than SOL itself, I think having an offset in the current 6 hours to forecast weather would not hurt me at all.

I would support SOL in working with slightly different weather than the current forecast, invisible to all except for the place and time of your boat. The weather would stay on the server and never be sent to the clients, so no chance for anyone to hack into the data.

Still I think this would be difficult to explain to a lot of people, but I might be wrong here.

Then again, I don't use the routing programs now. I did earlier use Sail Planner and it was a great learning experience and most interesting practice.

Personally, it was not cost justifible to purchase Sail Planner. So Now I'm back to just SOTP sailing.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
