Was pondering the mechanisms of the SYC overall rankings and noticed that all races are given equal weight, regardless of number of entrants. So, for example, a 150 finish in a popular race with 500 entrants is worth the same as a 150 finish of 151 in a less popular race. This seems somehow inequitable, as one is a top 30% finish while the other could have merely crossed the start line.
I don't have a solution, or even pretend to know if it needs a solution - Just want to throw it out for discussion...
First, let's note that SRC is doing a good job with their series. Each series containing similar races of similar popularity. The problems only exist in the SYC ranking, not in the other series.

I've raced in IRL championships where it worked as follows:
If more than 10 entrants, #1 gets 10 points, #2 gets 9, and so on. #11 and after that get no points.
If less than 10 entrans, #1 gets n points (n=number of entrants), #2 gets n-1, ..., #n gets 1
For sol, the numbers would need to be a bit different.

I also raced in events where the longer races (offshore) counted double (or more) compared to the shorter inshore races. This might be good to use in sol, because there's a lot of short sprints, and fewer long ocean races. In the case of sol, sprinters would have a much easier job of getting enough podium places to get up in the ranking, because they have more opportunities. The SYC ranking has 20 (out of 30) discards to compensate this.
I think the simple solution is to participate in the races with less entrants and get the easy points.

Hi ;)

The point raised by Brewman is a very good one , and becomes an even better one after the focus offered by Kroppyer .

We want to be as close as possible to IRL , and therefore apply the ISAF scoring rules for races and Championships . The one ranking that is really affected by lack of specific weight for long races is the SYC ranking ( our own Club dinamic ranking ).

The idea of assigning different weight to races , in order to have a better CLUB ranking is in the agenda . We need to overcome a few problems ( e.g. each race being valid for SYC and a number of series ) but we will get there.

I will raise this topic within the Managemnt Team as soon as we will be 100% sure that all the changes we implemented at the beginning of 2015 are totally waterproof.

I also need to give Markku a break after all the headaches I have given to him to get where we are today as far as rankings are concerned . ;)

Till soon

Piero

Although not directly related to the previous comments something that I have been giving thought to is the possibility of there being a new category for races held on inland lakes. Obviously this would not affect this Calendar year but perhaps for the future.

The Vineyard Race 2025

For the first time since first hosting a virtual Vineyard in cooperation with Long Island's Stamford Yacht Club back in 2010, due to an operational calendaring error, Sailonline has missed the start of the real life race, the USA’s Labor Day weekend this year unusually falling across the turn of August. Silly SOL! So, a week late please join us anyway for a virtual rerun of Stamford’s iconic annual overnighter from their club line out the sound to Buzzard's Bay Light near Martha's Vineyard Island and back again, leaving Block Island to starboard. This year, Sailonline is making its magic MC 38 available to competitors, a race boat with a quirky polar that will require you to stay wide awake as you speed around the c 250 nm course, in rockstar style!
