Board » General Discussion » Wrong Speed VMG

Page: Previous 1 2 3 4 Next

Hi Jacob, thanks for the quick answer. Your absolutely right, I didn't had that in mind that it has to fit on all boats :-)

Probably we should have a poll about how much a boat is loosing on speed when gybing ;-)

BTW: a brilliant job you and your crew are doing
I've been watching my boats performance upwind. I adjust my course to get maximum VMG however boats sailing much lower courses seem to gain. Max VMG seems to take place at around 41deg but most sail much lower? Am I missing something?

Maximum VMG doesn't necessarily guarantee gains if it takes you too far away from the course. You might be trading (bleeding) miles for speed.

Philip
If you have just tacked or adjusted your course a lot, then your performance drops, but it takes time to build up. Even at 100% it seems that boats that have held the same couse for several hours, go that little bit faster than a recently tacked boat. It seems that a steady course will end up at 105%.

It happens IRL as well.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
The boats never go above 105% - however, boats without any recent commands will go down in update intervals which means they "jump" further in each time step (which is longer).
tks for the replies. I didn't know about the "jumping". That could be it,
just perception,not reality.

Thanks Kalle.
That explains my "perception" of 105%.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
Regarding the loss of performance, I agree you need a period of loss, but does it need to be the same for all types of virtual boats? I sail on a Corsair Sprint 750, and we can jibe and be back to full speed, all within less than 45 sec! Monohulls require more time, but it seems in the game, that the SeaCart 30's take maybe 5 min to get back to 100%, which seems very slow, and discourages jibing on little lifts.

I'm not complaining, I'll play the game no matter the performance. :)
You are totally correct. However, we need to implement a performance-loss that works for all boats to minimize administration. Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to design such a loss. Regards Jakob

If I may jump in here, I am interested in the 105% performance factor. Is this documented anywhere?

I have to admit it makes some sense, because when I am on a course for a long time, I will do more "tweaking" to get an extra tenth of a knot or two, but I doubt that I could gain 5% additional speed normally. I do think that if this factor exists, it should be documented as part of the game, and shown on the "performance meter," as it would make a major difference in strategy.

As a former teacher who used to give "bonus questions" which allowed for test grades above 100%, I guess I have no problem with going above 100%, but isn't this the same effect as having a very long recovery period after a course alteration. In other words, is 100% the new 95%?

Neumayer Station to Biscoe Wharf 2024

It’s Autumn now in Antarctica, the sun is permanently below the horizon, but during the day, from c 0900 to c 1700 local time, there is some twilight – nautical twilight, not to be confused with civil twilight which is brighter. The penguins are starting to huddle together to keep warm and the sea ice is growing. Time to get back to Biscoe Wharf then, before the water becomes impassible. Including a detour past Argentina’s main two Antarctic stations, it’s only 1900nm, so, although we’ll be in a hurry, we will take the bigger, better ice-classed Paratii 2 once more, just to be sure!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
