Board » General Discussion » Week-end races

Hello everybody,

I participated in my first race on SailOnline not long ago (VO inshore). I quite like the platform. One problem I have though is that I do not have the opportunity to play during the week.

I was wondering whether it would be possible to create a series of week-end races for people like me.

In my idea, these races should start on Friday 19:00 UTC, end approximately on Sunday afternoon, use fast boats (Orma tri's for example), take place in temperate latitudes with complicated weather systems, and not include any marks as to leave a maximum of routing options available.

What do you think?

Regards,

Francois

Hi. I really like your ideas with weekend races. Maybe even a series. You know, your chances of getting such races increase further if you send me specific requests including course suggestion (lat/long of the course waypoints) and maybe even a boat polar. Thanks for feedback :-) jakob@sailport.se

OK. I need to think a bit about it. I will come back with a few ideas in one or two days.

Cheers,

Francois
First, I would like to thanks the guys and gals behind SailOnline to take up the idea I formulated in January.

I had a lot of fun in those few races that I could participate in, and I believe I am not the only one.

Two quick remarks though. First, for me, it really makes a substantial difference to have a good chance to finish the regatta by Sunday evening, as I can not access the normal race page at work. I am probably not the only one with that problem. In that respect, the North Sea Open was probably a bit too long. The Manila Race certainly looks too long if we start on Saturday.

Second, may I perhaps suggest to start the Manila Race tomorrow,as May 1st is a public holiday in many countries (disclaimer: I plan to sail for real on Sunday, and that is not compatible with an intense virtual regatta ;-) )

Cheers,

Francois on Incognito

Hi!

Well, ok, race starts tomorrow :-)

Hi Jakob,

Fantastic, thanks. I will be at the start line tomorrow.

Cheers,

Jakob,
Again we are looking at a race this weekend with NO wind. What do you guys do, Look around the world and find the lightest conditions you can find and put a race there? You CANNOT be doing it any other way. Please don't tell me it is just luck that all the weekend races have no wind!!!!
Here is a novel idea, Lets make the weekend racing NOT included in the SYC ranking. Publish a schedule of races that count for the SYC ranking. (Big name races)
You can have another ranking for the weekend races that people can race if they want.
It is the same idea as seasons points racing, and then doing beercan racing on the weekend!
I do realize that some of the big races like OSTAR, Volvo, Sydney Hobart etc start on a weekend. That is okay. It is these imaginary, minefield, design the race so the racers will be online for five days to go nowwhere race is what is the problem!!!

Hehe, the lack of winds is just pure luck/unluck :-) The idea with different series is good! We will definetly consider. Thanks.

I really like this thread, what happened?
is it being planned?

I have lots of questions
1. about orno runt, its a nice race but waiting for good weather is a pain, going with this thread in I and it seems other people cant be online at specfic times when the weather is good. So why not for a race like this set a constant wind speed that rotates 360 degrees every 7 hours. so there is a level playing field but leaves room to pick the best wind direction, and gives every one in what ever time zone a chance.
2. a timed race round New Zealand for example, that takes a day or two or 3 i have no idea how long it takes to sail round New Zealand. so u can use TWA to sail and sail tactically according to the incoming weather.

well thats enough for now

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
