Board » General Discussion » SOL Improvement - BBQ-ing

Can the thoughts below improve or just mess up our game.

When BBQ-ing it shall not be possible to gain performance while fetching a cold beer in the kithen. The performance have to be 80% when you get off the rocks.

Passing narrow straits on DC:s may content deliberate BBQ:s.
A time penalty (the boat is stucked on the beach to be repaired) will be added the second time the boat is beached. The time penalty will increase for every visit on land.

With no IRL sailing experience, I personally don't find it realistic that a boat can survive much more than one BBQ.

I've been "beached" numerous times IRL, without damage. It takes some time to get off the beach (depending on your speed, "sliding" up the beach), and on the tide. But I haven't been sailing around actual rocks, which may damage your boat.. a lot.

It's probably too hard to make beaching realistic, compared to other improvements to SOL.

That said, I think (like you), that the 80% should not disappear in 20 seconds. As far as I can derive (I don't know how SOL's sailing engine internally works, but I can guess) the server can't make the difference between twa=0 after being beached, and twa=0 by command.

If you want SOL to be more realistic, the performance system might need an update, it's not at all realistic. One of the changes could be a slower recovery at twa=0. I would like to read about the designer-thoughts about the current perf. system, why is it like this?

PS: a boat can beach without damage, but you can't BBQ a boat more than once, after the first time, it can't be classified as a boat any more. Well.. you might, if you have your boat "rare" instead of "well done".
Many times irl I have had the keel stuck in the shifting sand bars of Moreton Bay, Brisbane. No damage. The famous Tjorn Runt is well known for rock hopping yachts and all seem to survive without too much damage.

There is also an arguement for an increase in efficiency after beaching. Old sailing ships and cruising yachts today beach on purpose for careening. This is to inspect the hull, make minor repairs and clean the hull of barnacles and fouling seaweed. After careening a boat would have a faster hull.

While waiting for the crew to finish the work, why not have an enjoyable BBQ. ;-)

Haida Gwaii 2024

We will end the second quarter of the ARCH competition with a 390nm race around the Haida Gwaii islands (literally "Islands of the Haida people"), also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. This is an archipelago located on the northern Pacific coast of Canada. In SOL, we last raced on this route in 2012 and few people remember what happened there. Prepare your Riptide 50 well, it's going to be a lot of fun.

Newport Bermuda Race 2024

The 636-mile biennial Newport Bermuda Race is one of the oldest regularly scheduled ocean races, and with the Fastnet Race and the Sydney to Hobart Race, it is one of the three great classic races of the yachting world. Founded in 1906, this 53rd running of the Bermuda Race can again also be participated in online.
Entries are invited for one of the four divisions:
Double-Handed Division:
Jeanneau Sun Fast 3600
St. David's Lighthouse Division:
Santa Cruz 52
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division:
Judel Vrolijk 62
Finisterre Division:
Riptide 50
Details for each yacht are available in the ‘Particulars’ links below. As in real life, you can only sail one boat in one division, so choose your virtual yacht carefully, and because of the unusual (for SOL) 4-division nature of the event, please note results will not count towards any Sailonline rankings.
