I was wondering if it is posible to have the christmas island race extended south by a hundred miles or so ( just incase need to dive south from light winds) might not use extra sea but you never know. Thanks SadlerClaus :)
Hi SadlerClaus

Yes, this is possible... it won't make the wx file much bigger and won't impact on N/S route choice.

Just in case you were wondering, the reason for not making the file big enough to permit sailing S of Australia is that the aim is to keep the wx file size down to 1000 points or less. Each point being a "corner" of each wx grid square. Right now we are using 2 degree grid squares (usually we use 0.5 of a degree) and even then the grid was more than 1200 points.

This isn't a problem for the Sailonline server, but can be a problem for SOLers receiving race updates, as the bigger the wx file download the longer it can take to arrive on screen, especially if your ISP connection is low bandwidth. If the file is too big, then the download doesn't complete before the next refresh and this means folks can be left without weather altogether. It doesn't happen much nowadays, but that's due to our keeping a close eye on file-sizes!

Thus Sailonline tries to preserve the integrity of the game as much as possible for everyone - whether they are on a mouse-driven flywheel computer or the latest super-internet highspeed broadband laptop. It is, after all, a founding principle of SOL that it is accessible to all!

Hope this helps!

and now.. I will amend the wx file so hopefully it fills in with the next update! The wx file will then be 1456 points in size.

:-)

CORRECTION
It is clear that this was a poor decision on my part and the bounds have been instantly restored to what they were originally. My apologies for being lulled into thinking that such a small change would not impact routing choices.

Iceland to the Falklands 2026

Welcome to an all-new route, the first of three Round the 'Old World' of Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. To give each leg of the ROW a bit of length we'll try to hug the coasts as little as possible, so starting in Iceland our first leg of the series, which will also be the final leg of our Quarter 1 Ocean Championships takes us 7200nm to the Falklands, the full length of the Atlantic end to end. To make sure we'll get it done within the month we'll be sailing our Maxi Trimaran.
