The THIRD short, informal, practice race will be held on Thursday, 21 November 2013.

This will be a special race:

Towbackrace
There are marks spread around the course. Participants collect points by sailing from mark to mark (which will be called a leg). Each leg is associated with a number of points. Participants are free to choose what legs they sail, and in what order.
- It's NOT obligated to round all marks, you are ranked by the total amount of points.
- You will NOT receive points if you sail the same leg (in the same direction) a second time
- You may choose any mark to start from
- You should clearly communicate via the chat when you have completed a leg, for example "I completed leg M2-M4".

Markrounding or -cutting
Marks are to be cut, your track has to touch the mark (at maximum zoon level) in order for that mark to be the end of the previous leg and the start of the next leg.
With the exception of your first mark of your first leg, you may also round the marks, such that:
1. You sail complete around the mark, cutting you own track
2. You may not round land or other marks in the process of rounding the mark, your track should isolate one mark from all others and from any land.
3. If an island functions as a mark, it does not count as "land" in the above rule (2).
The track produced from the towback itself is not part of the race: you cannot cut or round a mark while being towed back.
Examples of rounding and cutting marks

Ranking
- The participants will be ranked on their number of points in descending order (the more points the better)
- If two participants have the same number of points, the one that completed his last leg first will be ranked higher than the other. If it is unclear who was first, both participants are ranked equally
- All participants will be ranked
- No G-SCOW is awarded, as this is not a normal practice race, there will be special titles to win though.

____________________________

RACE START
The race starts 18:00 utc
Choose any mark to start from

RACE FINISH
Towback for the official race is at 20:00 utc, the practice race will stop when all participants are placed back at SOL start. Marks cut or rounded while being towed to SOL start don't count.

COURSE
Marks 2, 3, 4 and 5 form the begin and end of the legs. Marks 1 and 6 form a gate, If you sail through this gate, you will receive 3 bonus points as soon as your current leg is completed. You will receive these bonus points at most once per leg.

USEFUL NOTE
The amount of points per leg is roughly equal the the number of minutes it should take to complete.

If map and description (table) conflict, description is leading.

TITLES TO EARN
Apart from the ranking some titles can be earned while racing:

Gatekeeper: Sailed trough gate every leg
Chef cook: longest bbq (only if significantly long)
Explorer: Sailed past a mark no-one else sailed past

=========================
RESULTS:

As JakeS finished his last leg before glynnwi did, he is ranked a bove glynnwi.

Refeno Rally 2024

Although since 1986 this 300nm course from Recife, Brazil, to Fernando Noronha Island has been run many times IRL, we have only used this route twice in SOL. This time it will be the route of the last race in the ARCH 2024 classification.
Although the winner of the general classification can already be determined, the fight for the next places on the podium should be fierce. There are several contenders and Dofour34 have them at their disposal. Since we are starting in Vida_Maldita's home waters, he will give us a 30-minute handicap. Or maybe we should give it to him? 😊

The Beagle in the Azores 2024

And west the Beagle went one final time to round the Cape of Good Hope on May 31 1836. Ashore, Darwin met up with the Astronomer Royal, Herschel, who just happened to be in South Africa at the same time mapping the southern skies. After sounding out his many ideas on evolution and extinction with Herschel, the Beagle now sailed north, stopping briefly in St Helena, Ascension and Brazil, and the Cape Verdes again, to reach the Azores on September 19, 1836. Fitzroy and Darwin at this stage were in a hurry to get back to Britain, but online in 2024 we will stay a little longer to explore this final remote archipelago in our virtual Tall Ship Class B Beagle, 630nm round and about the islands, minding as always in these waters not to bump into any large cetaceans!
