2008-12-09 07:50:30 - start of race notifications
Hi!

I know it happens most of the time, but why not have it automated so that it happens EVERY time a new race is announced? It isn't funny missing the start with 11 hours just cause the race wasn't announces.

I know you're all swamped and this might not be the most important thing but still...

I'll see if I can make something usefull :)

An opt-in email list that just get short announcements when the races go visible.

Another option is a RSS feed with the races, would that work?

Either would be fine. If you have the time to build it than it's perfect. Otherwise I just stared to build that kind of rss, probably finished during this week :)

(also another really cool new page for SOL is ongoing :))

Thanks andreas, that's great! Is it running on a permanent server so that I can link to it in more public places?

As long as comhem works it works :)

As long as I'm told about any problems I should be able to get it up and running quickly :)

Still experimental though, I haven't even tested it with a newly announced race.

This has now been tested for 2 race starts and actually has more than one user :)

I would say it works.

The nature of RSS says that the items/posts shouldn't change but race notifications changes as the race is first announced, then opened, but that also works and all races is made aware of...

I recommend this for this RSS-hungry sailors out there :)

A great thing would be to have SMS reminders sent out. A good way to do it would be to have SYC members get SMS reminders while mail reminders can go to all.

This is the way it's done in Hattrick and it works like charm there.

Thanks for a great game!

I'm not an official of Sailport but just a quick note. To send an SMS in the volumes we're talking here would cost around 1 SEK (0.10 Euro cent) per SMS. I'm pretty sure the banners won't cover that.

For an extra charge though... :)

I am well aware that there are costs involved, but a great way of getting more people to ultimately pay for the game (ie being SYC members) would be to provide more value for the money (other than this great game itself, obviously). If game reminders is on the hotlist for the participants it would be a great feature to develop to get more than the ≈500 SYC members we are today?

I'm also pretty sure Sailport could negotiate a better deal than 1 SEK per SMS - perhaps by letting an operator in on the banners. It can be done.

Just my 2 cents...

Mad Max by Balloon 2026 - Across the Outback

Mad Max Rockatansky doesn’t get to go in a balloon in any of the Legends of the Wasteland, and the Wasteland is not necessarily the Outback of Australia, but Mel Gibson and film director George Miller indubitably are… of Australia, and ballooning as reconnaissance is a main feature of the Mad Max spin-off video game, so here goes: 1500nm in a balloon from somewhere on the edge of the Outback, Goondiwindi, to cross a finish line at Fitzroy Crossing, somewhere on the edge of the Outback!
