Sailonline is delighted to announce that it will be partnering with Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, one of the oldest sporting clubs in Hong Kong, for the running of the 2013 Audi Hong Kong to Vietnam Race which starts in Hong Kong on 17 October - Sailonline's virtual race is currently planned to open for practice over the weekend of 12/13 October

First conceived in 1996 when it was run at Lunar New Year, the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race is a 656nm Category 1 offshore race and a biennial fixture in the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club sailing calendar. As a constituent event of RHKYC’s China Coast Race Week, the race makes the most of October’s prevailing north east monsoon to give competitors a thrilling, predominantly downwind race from Hong Kong to Nha Trang on Vietnam’s eastern seaboard.

The 2013 edition will see a seventeen-strong fleet chasing the current race record of 42h 45m 41s, which was set in 2004 by Grant Wharington’s Skandia.

OK folks... the real course coords have been provided. The real racers may start from up by the Clubhouse of RHKYC (Kellett Island) and head past Shek O Rock OR they will start where we are starting. The Kellett Island+Shek O option would be nigh on impossible for folks to DC, hence our Lamma choice.

*Shek O Rock – Starboard Rounding
Latitude N22* 14’ 3” Longitude E114* 15’ 59”
[*only if Harbour Start]

Wenwei Zhou – Port rounding
Latitude N21º49.0, Longitude E 113º 56.0

North Reef Paracel Islands – Port passing
Latitude N17º 06.0, Longitude E 111º 26.0

Triton Island – Port passing
Latitude N15º 50.0, Longitude E 111º 10.0

Hon Dung – Starboard rounding
Latitude N12º 26.0, Longitude E 109º 22.5

Rer Noir North Cardinal - Port rounding
Latitude N12º 14.3, Longitude E 109º 13.8

Finish Line:
In Nha Trang Bay, Vietnam
approx N12º 13’60, E 109º 13’18 .

and true-to-form we have created a splendid race.

To sneak preview it you will need to log in using these credentials:

USERNAME: sol
PASSWORD: sol

and then copy/paste this url into your browser:
http://www.sailonline.org/windy/run/621/

The race from "Nha Trang Approach" has to differ from the real race because of the way the server generates the sailing line ("outside" all waypoints) ... but hopefully this won't prove too controversial.

If anyone has a suggesstion as to how we can even more closely match the official course (bearing in mind our rhumbline constraints) then please do make it!

Thanks!
