Commentary

Displacing about 60 tonne, our Swan 90 rarely ramps up ahead of its bowwave onto a plane, thus according to theory limiting the boatspeed she achieves to 1.34 x √90 or 12.7 knot, which she already reaches in just 9 knot of breeze. More wind as Shania Twain might sing does not impress her much, until from about 25 knot (F6) and on deep angles with every bit of canvas her crew can find set and pulling, she does start to take off, although modestly compared to latest generation racers of similar volumetric dimensions but equipped with swing keels, foils, water ballast and the rest.

Be it as it may (let it be, Lennon/McCartney), this lack of top speed was of little concern to the 120 SOLers who departed Tangier on the 26th of March for the second leg of Sailonline's 'Africa by Sea' circumnavigation of Alkebulan 'mother of mankind', as it was mostly light and variable winds that they were anticipating, which was going to suit their 90 footers well. How well, and who, it suited when, you can discover in a fine report under the button above (again featuring the heraldry of the ports of departure and arrival) from new-to-SOL, but not to 'online sailboat racing simulation' Panpyc, on the occasion of his first SOL podium.

In the end, after 8 days at sea, it was the redoubtable WRmirekd who took the gold, but various others had challenged and held the lead, their hopes only to be dashed by a missed or misinterpreted weather forecast, or some dumb stubbornness or other mishap (take your pick). Great racing. Off to Swakopmund next!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
