Commentary

Back in 2013, this race was the last of a four-leg series designed by keen, erstwhile SOLer NZL_Scotsman, in memory of his grandfather who supplied the lights of Vancouver Island by sailing ship, many, many decades ago, and it was this leg that back in 2013 and presumably in 1913 as well, proved to be the most challenging, and especially the long narrow passage up the Alberni Inlet for the eponymous resupply.

To quote from NZL_Scotsman’s report to the blog in 2013: “There was carnage on the course with numerous beachings and countless tacks and gybes. Lots of boats rose and fell on the leaderboard faster than the tides.” So, we simply had to see that spectacle again!

In 2013, it was sassy66, who still races more than actively with us today, who best negotiated the rocks and shifts along the Vancouver Island coast and up the inlet. sassy66 wasn’t out for this one, and no one can say whether he could have repeated that victory. What can be said though is that another stalwart SOLer, who finished 13th in 2013, took the gun, completing the course in a few minutes more than one day, besting his nearest rivals by a few minutes more. Top class timing, rafa!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha


The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.

The British Isles Circumnavigation is here! Inviting skippers to take on an epic 1,720nm clockwise voyage around Britain and Ireland!
