Commentary

Perhaps because the script of the Sultan's lingua franca commands ran from right to left, and Sinbad, being a modern man educated in Latin, read them the other way around, or more likely because he happened to be in Aqaba and not Bahrain when the commands finally reached him, it was from Aqaba that our fleet of IMOCA 60 v2's departed and not Bahrain, and we soon learned that this was not the time of year to do that. A short report by bonknhoot on the totally forecastable weather conditions encountered under the Jannah-green button above tells more, but suffice to reflect here that the monsoon was against us and it took our leaders more than 16 days to complete the c 3000nm voyage, which equates to an average VMC of 7.7kn. The caravan route via the oases of Tayma, Khaybar and El Riah (Riyadh) operated by the nomadic Nabataean empire since before Roman times would have been the more sensible less Sinbad-able way to go – just 2000 camelometers (1 cm ≈ 1 km ≈ 0.5nm). Travelling 12 hours each day at 5 camelo's per hour it would have taken twice as long, but might have been more comfortable.

But by sea we went, and it was FreyjaUSA who mastered the monsoon the most magnificently, coming in some 25 minutes ahead of his nearest pursuer, SKOVSER, with the best of the rest a further 15 minutes or so astern. First blood to FreyjaUSA then; let's see what happens in the next race of the series when Sinbad will set off to Seek Spices! "

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha


The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.

Palk Bay TIMED Race 2026

This month’s TIMED race takes us to the shallow waters of Palk Bay located between India and Sri Lanka. Sail the impressive MC 38 around a roughly 140 nm course through two narrow channels before returning to the start/finish line in Jaffna.
