Commentary

This is one of the shorter Timed Races for 2022, both by distance and time. At just 20nm long, all one had to do was to round some marks off Huelva before returning to the finish. However, that didn't mean it was an easy task - those marks were offshore in already narrow waters, meaning that space for manouvering was at a premium, so focusing was key to winning this race. Luckily, with the short course and favourable winds (it is a Timed Race after all!), each attempt would be over relatively quickly, thus making it more manageable.
A total of 204 completed attempts of this course were made by 89 skippers in the allotted 2 weeks; a summary of attempts is provided here. Most days saw at least one attempt reach into the 2:30s, but opportunities to go sub-2:30 were comparatively scarce. In fact, there were only two such windows of strong crosswinds that were ideal for such attempts. brewman managed to secure the then-fastest time of 2:21:59 in the first window at 2pm UTC on 26 July. However, brewman wasn't quite as swift in the second (faster) window on 27 July - despite improving on their time, it wasn't quite enough. Instead, Cippalippa managed to set a time of 2:16:48 which secured their victory, with wsguerin and Kipper1258 coming behind at 5 and 13 seconds slower, respectively. Congrats!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
