5 September 2021

We are mere days away from Sailonline’s annual Caribbean Pirate Fest – an opportunity for SYC members to change their boatname to something piratical, for this race only, and to fill our General chat column with pirate-speak! (arr, that be lingo yer varmint!). This will be the 11th year of this fun event and as ever, you are all invited to participate, even if you aren’t a member of SYC, but as Sailonline’s only source of income is SYC memberships, perhaps now is the time to join!

Racing round the Caribbean, picking up barrels of rum from several distilleries as we go, and allegedly delivering them to Cancun Mexico is our mission – this year our beautiful “tall ship” is our impressive multi-masted superyacht, Falkun.

As always there are PRIZES for those who take a more serious approach to this event – for the rest of us, the high spirits of rum and pirate lingo is enough! This year on offer are:

A Nauticalia Brass Navigator’s Companion (i.e. a brass compass with a fold-out magnifier), donated by RainbowChaser for the race winner.

An extension of SYC membership for the first three SYC members crossing the line (membership must be valid at race start to be eligible) as follows:

1st SYC finisher – 12 months SYC membership extension
2nd SYC finisher – 6 months SYC membership extension
3rd SYC finisher – 3 months SYC membership extension

SO JOIN THE SYC AND RACE WITH A PIRATE NAME:
SYC Members only may request that their SOL boatname is changed to something piratical for this race! All info is here . Such a boatname change for this one race will not change your login credentials or affect your SYC rankings. You may join SYC at any time before race finish and have your name changed!

In May 2013 the world of sailing saw the tragic and premature death of Andrew “Bart” Simpson when the AC72 he was crewing, in practice for the America’s Cup, capsized in San Francisco Bay. A sailing foundation in his name was established and its annual sailing event, Bart’s Bash, is now the biggest in the world – raising funds to bring sailing to all. Sailonline invites all racers to consider contributing to the work of this charity, or to spread word of its work. Find out more by clicking on this image:

Sailonline’s Carib Rum Run 2021 will open for pre-race practice on Wednesday, 8 September at 1700utc.

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
