The San Diego Islands Race is a classic run from Point Fermin, San Pedro California, to San Diego and its course is dependent on a variety of factors, chiefly how far off San Clemente the United States military chooses to fix its exclusion zone. This means that year to year the course maybe slightly altered so the race organisers have to plan for all eventualities, as does Sailonline as their virtual partner! This is a delightful part of the world and also home to some advanced technology USOs (unidentified submersible objects) which add mystery to the already challenging race course!

Real and Virtual Fleets together at the Finish

The race this time had a wide participation with 167 entrants flying the flags of 31 different nations and our TP52s raced well. Line Honours in the real race went to the converted VO70, Pyewacket, now owned and raced by Roy P Disney and new holder of the course elapsed time record, while our podium, drawn from Asia and Europe saw off fierce competition from the locals. This was one of the fastest Islands Races ever with consistent winds keeping the fleet moving apace. There was good competition throughout – and a swift glance through the leaderboard (linked above) reveals mini-competitions throughout the fleet.

Our thanks go to the real race organisers for entrusting us, once again, with one of California's prestige offshore races and we hope to see you all again next time!

Congratulations to our 2021 virtual podium for a truly remarkable finish – just THREE seconds separated first and second and a mere 7 seconds separated second and third – altogether a total of 29 boats finished in the first 10 minutes.

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
