12 March 2021

Welcome to the Newport Beach to Cabo San Lucas International Yacht Race 2021! Sailonline is delighted to announce it’s new partnership with Newport Harbor Yacht Club to run a virtual version of this downhill, challenging offshore race from Newport Beach, California, to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

First raced in 1971, this 800nm race has seen a 5-7 day event cut down to 3+ due to the evolution of yacht design. From the IOR boats 60yrs ago, the route to Cabo has been raced with ultralights, then the 70 footers followed by yet bigger and faster 80ft Mini-Maxis and on up to the 100ft Maxis. Race elapsed times are forever being broken, while participating in the event remains appealing to skippers and crews of boats of all sizes.

The weather patterns for the Cabo Race are affected by the late winter/early spring low pressure systems that cross the Pacific in the Polar Jet Stream which can see a combination of light and heavy winds from all compass points in the first 400nm of the race which then usually turn into N-NE at 15-20kts below Cedros Island and Turtle Bay. The final 180nm can see heavy 30kt winds and 8-12ft breaking seas arrive off Cabo San Lazaro but the arrival in Cabo, brings the sweet smell of the fragrant desert air mixed with Mariachis and margaritas

Sailonline's race will open for pre-race practice on Tuesday, 16 March.

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
