Commentary
At the beginning of 2021 it was hoped that the Pantaenius Shetland Race would once more race from Bergen, Norway, to and back from Lerwick, Shetland. Unfortunately the #COVID19 pandemic and virus variants continued to create travel impossibilities around the globe and between UK and countries in the EU – so it was that, for a second year, with full permission of the real race organisers (who were going to race in the waters local to Bergen) Sailonline could race the course(s). The Shetland Islands are one of Sailonline’s virtual “homes” around the world and not a year goes by without, usually a winter and a summer race to its capital, Lerwick. The summer run across the North Sea can be interesting as the wx fronts from the Atlantic, the continent of Europe and the North Pole all mix/mingle there.

The wind gods were kind to our virtual fleet this year and chose to give us pretty stable conditions at reliable speeds – the front runners in both races thus found themselves pressured to perform and both individual podiums should be pleased with their success. Race 1 saw the podium separated by 3m10s while Race 2 the gap was a super-tight 8s!

Many congratulations to our series podium whose combined scores brought them to the top of the fleet of competitors flying the flags of 28 nations, and a hearty “well done” to all who completed both legs of the series.

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
