Commentary
Towards the end of 2020, after a year of a world coping with the global #COVID19 pandemic, Sailonline was hoping against hope that the 2021 Up Helly Aa Festival in Shetland would be able go ahead but the organisers, prudently, shelved the festival, leaving it to locals to organise small, socially-distanced events. Usually a highlight of Sailonline’s winter racing – the live-stream of the Up Helly Aa Parade and Galley Burning often commented on in race chat, bringing our global sailing community together – but this year, with many new racers finding their way to our platform, there was entertainment aplenty as this notoriously twisting slalom course tested the mettle of first timers! Sailonline would, of course, like to thank Shetland Tourism for once again promoting our virtual event and Shetland Webcams for providing superb viewing for our (virtual) visiting fleet.

Quite why it is that upon Sailonline’s arrival off Aberdeen, hitherto strong and gusty winds seem to take fright and flee across the N Sea, fortunately, 2021 didn’t see them altogether vanish so the race was a relatively brisk affair. Despite the published permission to approach Gruney from E or W, there was some discussion about an apparently “rogue” racer – in fact, it is always fun to see who will take the W route (it can pay off!).

A total of 152 boats registered to race, flying the flags of 31 nations in the event, and one hesitates to confirm how many found themselves bbq-ing (intentionally for some bunk-time, or inadvertently!) but, as ever, this tricky course brought out the best in some racers, particularly our podium three, who are to be congratulated on their success. A’OI!

Here’s hoping we can race once more to a firey festival in 2022!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
