Commentary
Several years ago, Sailonline’s boathouse received the addition of a splendid superyacht polar – born out of a desire to see how these boats actually perform and to provide racers with a glamorous vessel for races in/around some of the more exotic locations in the world. Unfortunately, those responsible for choosing the boats for our races didn’t favour this awesome and stunning looking piece of multi-masted sailing technology so the Race the Ditch 2021 event was only the fourth time that we have been fortunate enough to test her sailing performance. With a polar giving windward performance more akin to that of a multihull, our beautiful Falkun gave us an interesting and challenging race from Australia to New Zealand – a transit only previously raced directly in actual tall ships!

A decent fleet of 160 registered in the race, flying the flags of 33 different nations, and with a degree of fanning-out from the start, it was soon clear that more than one option might prove successful and by the time the leaders reached Cape Reinga it was clear that the approach to Auckland would be best effected by sailing NE away from New Zealand’s N Island! The race then became a totally different affair from the broad sweep of ocean racing, and turned into a ferocious inshore tactical battle.

Many congratulations to our podium who, had they been forming a parade of sail on arrival in Auckland couldn’t have timed their presentation to the city more accurately, with our winner arriving 15m ahead of his closest rival in second place, who was nearly 6m ahead of the third! Very well done guys!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha


The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.

Palk Bay TIMED Race 2026

This month’s TIMED race takes us to the shallow waters of Palk Bay located between India and Sri Lanka. Sail the impressive MC 38 around a roughly 140 nm course through two narrow channels before returning to the start/finish line in Jaffna.
This is a TIMEDrace so you may RE-REGISTER HEREto try again after finishing a run. You will have two weeks to test your skill and decision making after the race opens.
