Commentary
There are some races that now form part of Sailonline’s annual traditions – that, over the years since the platform made it’s debut online, have inextricably bound themselves into our narrative. In Sailonline’s Racing Calendar, set alongside the series of Championships, which all generate keen competition, is a category called “Other” and it is here that you will find many gems of racing, and in April, the gem is Jakob’s Birthday BBQ Race. At first sight the course seems reasonable, but zoom in, and then Max Zoom, and you will find yourself inside Stockholm’s Archipelago with the seemingly impossible task of racing from the Revengegrundet Lighthouse to the finish in Baggensfjärden. To the newcomer to Sailonline the course is truly daunting, so many possibilities, so much to think about that there is scarcely time to think about getting a coffee. For those older hands, the course represents two things – a celebration of the birthday of the more senior of Sailonline’s two Founders and a chance to improve on previous attempts. Every year there is always a chance of doing better or, for those who have raced well, to hold on to previous laurels!

Conditions this year were good – racing Sailonline’s Linjett 33, a typical archipelago sailor, in steady not unfavourable winds, meant that it was going to be a keenly fought affair. From the start the fleet split to some extent – perhaps predicated on other at-home priorities – but it soon became clear which course should have been chosen!

This year 142 boats were registered, flying the flags of 30 nations and, while this wasn’t a record participation (our schedule was pretty full-on) there is no doubting the fierce nature of the competition - our winner arrived in 4h 49m 11s, the second fastest time for our Linjett 33, and a total of 37 boats arrived inside the next 10mins!

Many congratulations to all who completed the course and especial congratulations to our brilliant podium who managed to arrive within 6s of each other! Very well done!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
