Commentary
It is said that time flies when you are having fun, so it follows that racing on Sailonline must be a lot of fun as it seems impossible that we have already completed the 2020 SSANZ Triple Series . It scarcely seems a year since a series blog was being written, and just the other day when we were heading off into the Hauraki Gulf for our first race, competing against the Young 88 Association.

As always the three races have been great – unfortunately for the real racers, the recent reintroduction of #COVID19 rules in Auckland meant that for them the series was curtailed as the SSANZ 50 couldn’t run in reality, but for Sailonline, where we can, for a brief time, leave the world of pandemic aside, there has been tough competition throughout.

Our podiums have well represented Sailonline’s global reach with racers from Australia, the Netherlands, Peru, Portugal, Singapore, and USA taking podium places across the three races. The waters of the Hauraki Gulf have become one of Sailonline’s favourite places to race and it is easy to see how New Zealand, despite being quite a tiny nation, can produce simply awesome yachties! Thanks to keen participation from NZ racers, Sailonline’s association with the SSANZ Triple Series goes back 9 years and is not only hugely valued but is also a key ingredient in each year’s Q3 racing calendar.

Sailonline’s series podium three are to be truly congratulated on taking the top three places in this epic series – good job! Whakamihi atu!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
