Commentary

A pleasant sou' sou' westerly was blowing out from sea across the probably deserted beaches as a hundred of the 133 entries hardened up, as the gun went on the committee boat offshore Lao, for a long beat out to Kihnu Island and a port hand rounding for home via Sorgu Majakas. An inside lift on port saw the leaders all ease sheets once the tip of Manija was cleared towards a tacking point to the east south east. Timing the tack was key and it was Starship form the USA who judged it best to show in the lead as the fleet reached the northern tip of Kihnu, to hold onto it all the way to the finish.

The struggle behind Starship for the minor places, however was fierce, and a finely judged tack for Kihnu Light saw the returning rumskib go into P2, only to lose it again at the Light to and equally finely judged rounding by bonknhoot. And so it remained to the finish, a bon and a hoot finely sandwiched between two interstellar travellers – rum is Danish for space, Raum, and skib is Danish for ship, Schiff, and Starship is as is well known what Jefferson Airplane became when that band went stratospheric. So welcome back to the podium rumskib and well won, Starship, and also bonknhoot clinching the Q2 Sprints series!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
