Commentary
It is more than 10yrs ago that Sailonline first started racing in the waters off New Zealand. The SSANZ Triple series soon became a fast favourite and through this series and many other races that start in Auckland or race in the Hauraki Gulf, these waters have truly become like a home-from-home for many of us. In recent years Sailonline has enhanced its relationship with this three-race series by directly competing against the sailors of the Young 88 Owners Association – these days Young 88s sail in their own Division.

The only shadow over this year’s race was cast by the news of the death in June of Jim Young, the yacht builder and designer, at the age of 94, but for the Young 88s the race turned into a true celebration of the enduring nature of his design style and the report of the race of the real Young 88s can be read here. Sailonline’s race, of course, started with the real Young 88s at 0915 NZ time and it is a tribute to all European timezone racers that so many persisted on-course without resorting to their bunk.

The SSANZ Results show that the best corrected time for the Young 88 start, S/Y Mindbender was 7h28m19s (elapsed: 9h42m14s) while our winner, nacrr, arrived at the finish in 12h28m40s. The locals win, but Sailonline’s participation this time included racers flying the flags of 29 nations and while our winner had a startling 2m53s lead at the finish, the second and third spots were separated by 30s and to the line they were being chased by a sizeable pack – a total of 10 boats finished within the first 10 minutes. An excellent result, guys, very well done – we’ve made a good start to this year’s series!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
