Commentary
There is something about the Christmas race that really begins to set the scene for the festive season! Maybe it is just the name? Maybe it is the multiplicity of choices (a bit like deciding which gift to open first)? Whatever it is, it brings out the comradely competitive nature of Sailonline and shows it’s platform to perfection – with the new HTML5 client and optional wind speed contours and arrow density, the screen truly “pops”. This is a long race – 5,827nm in all – and this year we raced the original E-W course which, given the changing nature of our climate and the earth’s wind patterns, didn’t offer the usual almost-predictability of how it would sail and, startlingly, the around-Australia route which in previous years, since it became an option, has always been fast proved to be scenic rather than speedy!

A fleet of 290 boats took part, flying the flags of 40 different nations (one of the highest number of nations taking part since Sailonline began) which boded well for a highly competitive event, and so it proved to be – just look at the leaderboard and throughout the list you can spot groups arriving so closely together, showing that while it must be awesome to take a podium place, there is always competition further back in the fleet!

Many congratulations must go to our all European podium this time – very well done indeed! The challenge is now set for next year!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
