Commentary
The second of three races being set up by Sailonline at the request of SailNewport was a tricky 138nm venture east from Newport, past Martha’s Vineyard, around Nantucket Island and a slalom back past the Nobska Light, around Naushon Island, south past Pasque and Nashawena Islands, and then north through Canapitsit Channel, leaving Cuttyhunk to port, to home! All in all a challenge for those in timezones other than EDT!

A sizeable registration for the race of 298 boats, flying the national flags of a record 42 nations, saw 203 of them set off on course. With the race starting at 2100utc, late in the European day, the crews from SailNewport would be thought to have had the time advantage but the competitive spirit of regular SOLers (racers on Sailonline) came to the fore and, perhaps with benefit of #COVID19 lockdown, the race was competitive across all continents!

Congratulations must go to the three podium place takers arriving with only 1m31s between them. All Sailonline regulars they are to be applauded for managing to snatch victory from the jaws of the USA East Coast contenders hot on their transoms! With many USA-flagged racers being on our virtual waters for the first time, that 10 of them appear in the top 20 is truly an excellent result.

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
