Commentary
It is said that “time flies, when you are having fun” and we must be having a lot of fun here on Sailonline as it truly does not seem to be a whole year since we last raced in the Stockholm Archipelago in celebration of the birthday of one of our founders. Jakob, a professor of marine architecture , and one of his created a navigation simulator to test the performance of coursework boat designs, and the end result was Sailonline! Sailonline is now owned by its community, but we will never forget our Swedish origins by racing this challenging slalom through the islands of the Stockholm Archipelago from Revengegrundet, near Sandhamn, to a finish close to Jakob’s home, where beer and bbq awaits!

The start from Revengegrundet almost always offers several possibilities –and this year’s start saw a pretty fair “fanning out” of the fleet. The winds were fairly light, which meant that a record time was out of the question. The run to St. Lokholmen was interesting and teased out potential leaders, but it was the run to Jakob’s mooring that, as ever, truly tested the ability of everyone to find and sail the best course!

Congratulations must go to everyone who took part with a special mention to our brilliant podium – it is a formidable race that challenges everyone - and especially to everyone who reached the finishing line (whether soon after our podium or much later!). Our podium must also receive our admiration – with a total participation of 155, flying the flags of 34 nations – to arrive at the front of the fleet within 2m of each other was a terrific result!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
