Commentary
It doesn’t seem a year since our last race up the east coast of New Zealands North Island, from Auckland to Russell, but the 2018 Coastal Classic has been and gone. Of course, for SOLers, once we reach the finish line we simply hang around to cheer on others and then, after a wee break, will head to one of the other open races on our Homepage. Spare a thought for the real racers, including SOLer idle (Starlight) who then have to sail back to home! Check out the real results here

The winds were truly kind to everyone this time, those awake at the helm as well as those relying on delayed commands (DCs) and it was possible to have a reasonable finish with almost minimal concentration. Such a lax attitude, of course, is not bound to lead to success and it is without doubt that our podium three, from Northern and Southern hemispheres, put in more than a casual appearance to bag the top spots. There were 122 of us racing, flying the flags of 30 nations, but despite racing our 60ft Trimaran polar for the third time since we began racing the Coastal Classic, we were unable to break the Sailonline course record set last year by bonknhoot. Arriving within minutes of each other, however, our podium three are to be congratulated for arriving before the rest of us! Nicely done, guys!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
