Commentary
This was the fourth of five races in this year’s Tall Ships Series and the second of the two races in the Tall Ships Races 2018 where Sailonline partners with Sail Training International .

Sailonline’s 90m Barque polar is a classic full rigged ship which means that windward sailing is just not possible. The real fleet, due to strong conditions on the original start date, started 24hrs behind Sailonline, and you can see coverage of their departure here:

You would think that such a head start would give our Barkies a clear advantage and… it would have done, but not only was the real course abbreviated to get the Tall Ships to Harlingen in time but also you can see from these two images that the real fleet – and Mir in particular - were making great inroads on our lead.

Despite the difficulties in reaching the finish line (some ships are still on their way!) perhaps we should therefore be grateful that our skills as Tall Ships Captains weren’t tested further! Read all about the real fleet’s racing here .

Our podium are to be congratulated on such a demonstration of sailing prowess – with over 10 minutes separating our top three (when just seconds separated the podium in the first race to Esbjerg) proves what a difficult race this was to do well in! Many congratulations guys!

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
