Sailonline.org is pleased to team with the organising authority of the Melbourne to Osaka Double-Handed Yacht Race 2018 to bring to prospective entrants and armchair navigators, our 2017 'Prelude 2' of the real race. The lucky podium place-takers of the Sailonline virtual race will each win a prize supplied by Gill Australia as follows:

1st – Race Trainer
2nd - Race Dry Bag
3rd - UV Tech Polo

With Sailonline's almost real time weather downloads from NOAA, this is intended to give prospective entrants in the real race a great opportunity to test their weather navigation skills. The 'Prelude' is timed to run at the same time of the year as the real race so weather patterns may be similar.

The Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race is a 5,500 nautical mile 2 handed yacht race - one of the longest two handed yacht races in the world and the only one running from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere. It encounters multiple weather systems and seasons as it crosses the Pacific ocean. The course takes the competitors into Bass Strait, up the east coast of Australia into the southeast tradewinds then through the doldrums on the equator. It then heads into the northeast tradewinds to the finish in the port of Osaka.

The race, first held in 1987 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Osaka, is held approx. every four years to celebrate the City of Melbourne and the City of Osaka sister city relationship. The 2018 event coincides with the 40th anniversary of this relationship and is a collaborative effort of three yacht clubs:

Sandringham Yacht Club - the Melbourne Host
Ocean Racing Club of Victoria - administering the on-water activities, and
Osaka Hokko Yacht Club - the Osaka Host

For the virtual 2017 M2O Prelude 2, Sailonline will be using the polar of a Class 40 yacht. Melbourne yacht 'Lord Jiminy' is a Class 40 and is already entered in the 2018 event. 'Lord Jiminy' and 'Nexba' are the 2 currently entered Class 40 yachts but two more are expected to enter the race.

The Sailonline race will open for practice at 2200utc on 28 March 2017 and the race itself starts on 1 April at 2200utc.

Tall Ships 2026 - Antwerpen to Stavanger


Welcome to the third of four virtual Tall Ships Races in European waters which are concurrently being organized in-real-life by Sail Training International . This third race is from Antwerpen back up the North Sea to Stavanger in Norway – another proper tall ship training adventure of circa 450nm, online again in Sailonline’s classic Clipper 240.
NOTE: Starts and Finishes in tall ships racing are always offshore to avoid conflict with shipping and shipping lanes; online and real-life may not match exactly.

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, and for the sixth year in succession the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. This year, for the first time, we will be racing the 300nm circuit in Sun Fast 3200s. As usual, there is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this LO300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May, and this year also the race and the Susan Hood count towards the title of Super Buddy 2026; so, let the competition be fierce!

This second race is from Harlingen in Friesland down along the coast of Holland and Friesland to Vlaanderen’s famous port of Antwerpen – circa 150nm in Sailonline’s classic Clipper 240.

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Sao Tomé to Tristan

The fifth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back south down the Atlantic from Sao Tomé on the Equator to Tristan da Cunha on the edge of the Roaring Forties. It’s 2500nm; in your path the Benguela winds and current along the south west African coast, and behind that the St Helena High stretching halfway to South America. So, mind where you go in your Volvo OD65 version 3 (based on sampled real-life race data by kroppyer)!

New Ice Age 2026 - Neumayer Station to Scott Base


For a second-half of long-distance ice-boating, we take our DNs to Antarctica for a circumnavigation of that continent in two legs clockwise, in harmony with the prevailing winds (such as there are), beginning with a race from Germany’s Neumayer Station to New Zealand’s Scott Base. It’s about 3500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
