Commentary
Navigating in a race around the world is always a great joy as it was Sailonline’s original design purpose and somehow one can just breathe a sigh of relief to be on our way across the oceans again. For those unfamiliar with ocean navigation, this is the perfect opportunity to hone your skills on probably the best online virtual sailing navigation simulator … for FREE! Whether you like increasing the density of the on-screen wind arrows (see Options under the Info Tab) and using Mark I eyeball to identify your best winds, or whether you are a supremo of routing software, searching for the optimal resource for winds and smoothing them to their closest fit with the Sailonline race, this really is a game for everyone. Old, young, aspiring yotties or legends (in reality and/or virtuality) and especially if you find yourself mostly house- or desk-bound, for whatever reason, this is the time to let your imaginations, and skill, roam the oceans and race!

The cannon was fired on the 10th of December at 12:00 UTC to the start of Leg 3 from Cape Town to Melbourne.
Sunshine, 22° Celsius and approx. 25 knots of wind gave us a quick start and the course was set against the southern ocean via Cape Good Hope.
Then southwards it went towards "The Roaring Fourties" and "The Furious Fifties" to (but not into) "The Screaming Sixties".
Our southern race border at 60°S gave us a clear run to Melbourne, but because of the impact of great circle routing on DTF rankings when we race close to polar regions, the boatlist only revealed the anticipated finishing order after we had rounded the "Melbourne Approach" mark.

The three winners on the podium crossed the finish line within 2 minutes and 29 seconds!!
Pretty impressive after 12 days of sailing.

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station


To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha


The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.

Palk Bay TIMED Race 2026

This month’s TIMED race takes us to the shallow waters of Palk Bay located between India and Sri Lanka. Sail the impressive MC 38 around a roughly 140 nm course through two narrow channels before returning to the start/finish line in Jaffna.
This is a TIMEDrace so you may RE-REGISTER HEREto try again after finishing a run. You will have two weeks to test your skill and decision making after the race opens.
