Racing around the world’s oceans is an epic endeavour. We will all have seen the recent finish of the Clipper RTW race, for half of which a (former) SOLer, JuJu, was on board, and no doubt will have also followed the adventures of solo RTW sailors and other big races. Racing around the world on Sailonline, mostly from the comfort of home or perhaps on the Android App, can generate a sense of security and anticipation as to how things will go. If you are adept at running routing software, your expectations can somewhat be managed, too. But there is one element over which there is no control, and that is the weather – NOAA grib file forecasts are extremely reliable and are usually delivered on time, they are then divided into open-race size pieces, and for those using routing software, SOLer brainaid’s site then creates “tidied” versions for uploading. When brainaid’s site became unexpectedly unavailable during this wrong-way-wround (sic) the world first leg, a very interesting dynamic became apparent. Those, recognising that in SOL as in life, not everything always works perfectly, so were prepared to seek an alternative option or had one available, and others feeling as if an essential part of their support had been taken away. This really brought Sailonline even closer to reality – where satellite connections and systems can fail, charts can be misread or, even worse, navigators fail to zoom close in and miss spotting dangers – and although it was frustrating for many, it is a good and sharp reminder that basic skills should never be let fall into disuse! On Sailonline at least, when something goes amiss, it is affecting all racers equally – unlike in reality when individual boat misfortunes can truly be a “game changer”!

To win such a race or to be in the top finishing group shows not only resilience but real determination to succeed against the odds, so please all congratulate our podium three for their achievement this time!

Don’t forget - if this was your first time crossing the Equator you are now entitled to the Sailonline Honours Badge – Shellback .

Kamchatsky to Tromsoe 2024

Just before the light failed entirely in Antarctica, Skip Novak managed to get his Pelagic 77 out of the ice and north up the Pacific to Kamchatsky. The sun is shining (24/7) and not a penguin to be seen, and Skip believes the Norh East Passage is ice-free (sufficiently) to attempt it, so all aboard for a c 4250nm voyage from east to west across the top of Siberia, Russia and Norway to Tromsoe!
