HERZLICHEN GLÜCKWUNSCH outlaw!! FELICIDADES tejo!! GRATULIERE bonknhoot!!
Race Leaderboard

Many congratulations to this year's Up Helly Aa Race Podium - arriving within 3 minutes of each other - the battles for all top 10 places were fierce. The course is always a challenging and fun one - especially when we start racing among the islands - the Elan 410 was a sturdy vessel for this and coped well with the strong winds!

But now, the fiery festivities are over for another year and hopefully everyone has recovered from the all-night partying! The galley-burning was particularly spectacular, with the flames encouraged by the strong winds - the real event was supported in Austria, by SOLer stoertebaeker's own galley which was burned ceremonially at the same time as the real boat. Race Comments
From SOLer Go4it:
‘I was very glad to be doing this race from my study. With 30 – 45 knot winds throughout the race and narrow passages between the islands, the down drafts would have been challenging for the helms and trimmers. Also the very square runs would have been hairy rides. I think I only tacked once and that was from fetch-to-fetch so the Gods were nice with the wind direction if not the strength. The need for a snug harbour at Lerwick is now well understood. The Up Helly Aa festival in the harbour this evening should be awesome in this weather (gale force winds are forecast).'

From SOLer tejo:
'This was a tough race into a North Sea tempest with gale force winds. The path of the violent storm past the British Isles shifted the wind east and this allowed sailors to choose between different options on the Sunday night, among them, outlaw.

'Fortunately we were comfortably at home in front of our computers, but our boats were experiencing the severe gales which were hitting the area in reality. On the Monday afternoon when we arrived at the Shetland Islands we had a nightmare route through a hundred islands to reach Lerwick Harbour.

'The overnight was tough, very tough, and everyone needed to put in a lot of work to arrive in Harbour, but the strong crosswind helped.'

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!
