Welcome to Georgian Bay and its surrounding environs for an unusual sailing challenge. The Bay itself is a hidden gem often overlooked because of its proximity to the Great Lakes of which it is an integral part but less often mentioned. In point if fact at the end of the last glacial epoch, some 10,000 years ago, during the formation of what was to become the Upper Great Lakes the watershed for this whole region flowed from Lake Huron over the Niagara Escarpment forming a waterfall plunging 175 feet known in Anishnabe legend as the "Place of Thunder Water" through the Northern end of Georgian Bay & then what is now identified as Lake Nipissing, Mattawa River & The Ottawa River Valley until it finally emptied into the Saint Lawrence at Montreal. Georgian Bay was then to become the gateway to the bounty of the Great Lakes region led by an advance party of the French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1615 following the native pathways established by this ancient drainage pattern.

This race is therefore a challenge of exploration to find the best way round the over 30,000 islands, that rival any archipelago worldwide, interposed between you and the marks you must navigate as directed not the least of which is Manitoulin Island noteworthy as the largest contained within a body of fresh water.

Please note it is possible to round all marks required for this race by choosing either side of Manitoulin Island as your route if that suits your strategic decision for this adventure. Should you go through the Mississagi Strait to the west of Manitoulin the Bayfield Sound mark will be accomplished as you do so & your immediate objective will then become the mark located in the La Cloche Channel.

The finish for this race also shares a historical footnote as the location of where the HMS Nancy, the last British warship plying its trade on the Great Lakes during the War of 1812, was sunk by an American fleet comprised of the Niagara, Scorpion & Tigress.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!
