GEFELICITEERD ArtPainter!!! HERZLICHEN GLUCKWÜNSCH rumskib!! GOOD ONYA GnT! click on results image to see larger

What a brilliant race and what fun to be partnered for the first time with Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. At the start a few SOLers were unhappy that the virtual race did not start in Victoria Harbour, but the majority (who were starting on DCs) recognised that Lamma Island was fairest for all. At the beginning it seemed as though the virtual fleet were quite some way ahead, but soon the front runners of the real fleet, Ragamuffin in particular, were surely overtaking. Ragamuffin went on to set a new course record.

Comparing the fleets positions (1) in the second hour of the race, (2) after a day and a half's racing, and (3) as the SOL fleet approached Nha Trang it is clear that the performance of the virtual TP52 was very close to that of the three real ones!

The weather was very kind and the brisk conditions of the start soon eased a little but remained sufficiently variable to provide a tactical challenge.

A total of 320 boats flying 44 different national flags registered for the race - of these 19 were displaying the Hong Kong flag (a first for Sailonline) and of the 8 HK racers who started, two have already finished - an excellent performance for a first race on SOL. Our podium three are, of course, to be congratulated on taking the highly coveted top spots against their challengers - 22 boats arrived in the first 10 minutes, with less than a minute separating the first five! BRAVO guys.... nice work!

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!
