ONNEKSI OLKOON karriv!!! FELICIDADES tejo y maritronco!!

This was a long-awaited running of a race created by SOLer zero as a replica of a real race that will run in reality again in 2014. Sailonline has thus been "testing the waters" (or, rather, the winds) to see just what makes it a classic. Our race report from zero will explain the tactics, so all that needs to be said now is a very big PARABÈNS (CONGRATULATIONS) to our podium who fought their way to the front to take these three special places from a fleet following hard on their transoms!

Race Report by zero

What a race! Six days of intense competition among the head pack. It all started innocently sailing out of the “Rio de La Plata” at a nice 7.5 kts southerly breeze. The fleet reached the south coast of Uruguay quickly and we were able to watch the beautiful coast passing by, including Montevideo and the glamour of Punta del Este.

So far so good, we turned the “corner” and we kept zig zagging north in light wind near the eastern coast of Uruguay and southern Brazil including an interesting night where the leaders tacked about 20 times changing leadership as many times as well. It was a sleepless night for us. But Mother Nature had worse plans for the fleet.

As the sun rose on the third day of the race the fleet felt a Northeastern head wind already blowing 14 kts and building up for the remainder of the race. At one point the wind was blowing 22 kts. The leaders did not give up; they kept zig-zagging up wind close together.

A race that started innocently with light reaching, ended up on strong winds on the nose. There were at least 14 boats with the possibility of wining the race, at the end karriv crossed the line ahead, followed by tejo and maritronco.

Congrats to the podium and all that finished this brutal up wind race. Enjoy Rio.

Red Eye - Melville Island PYOC 2026

Melville Island is the largest of the Tivi group opposite the port of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Tropically forested and thinly populated, not a lot goes on there, but let’s race around it anyway, lar- or starboard round, it’s a little more than 120nm, so, no matter where you are navigating from on the planet, you will be hard-pressed to complete the course aboard your J-80 in daylight hours!
