When Magnus Olsson arrived in Rio to win Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race of 2008, he sailed into the record books in more ways than one - not only had he completed the longest ever leg of a VOR, not only had he won the longest leg of a VOR but he did it in 40 days, 5 hours, 37 minutes and 57 seconds.

When NZL_Scotsman, bigbull, outlaw and the others in our top finishing group set off from Qingdao it was with the determination to do well but, probably, not seriously considering their times would better those of the real race - it sometimes seems unfair to make direct comparisons - but that is what they have done! In fact, all the boats currently finished have beaten the record time.

Many of us "down course" know that we may not reach the line before the race has to close and are in complete awe that you have just left us as specks in another ocean completely. Very well sailed guys!

The sailonline tribute race in honour of Magnus Olsson started on 11 May 2013 at 1800z. The sailing world lost the very popular Olsson in April. He took part in six Whitbreads/Volvo Ocean Races and won with EF Language. However, the ever enthusiastic Olsson took perhaps his most memorable leg victory in the 2008/9 event between Quigdao to Rio. Regata dell’Accademia Navale 2026

Welcome to Sailonline’s partnership with the City of Livorno (Leghorn say the English) in cooperation with the local yacht clubs and the Italian Navy, offering all the online opportunity to race the famous Regata dell’Accademia Navale - 630nm in length. Starting and finishing in Livorno, this year the race takes you the length and breadth of the Tyrrhenian Sea via little Mortorio (Mortoriotto) off Sardinia to Capri and home again to Livorno. This race also counts towards Sailonline’s Magical Mediterranean Series and the SuperBuddy title. Online, you will be sailing a Mini 6.50, to give you a match against several of the real-life entrants, which you will be able to track on-screen!

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara


Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island. It’s one of the longer ones 6400nm, more than half way around the world (and the Antarctica). It starts the 2026 OCQ2, and will be sailed in our Steinlager 2, contrary to prior notice.
