6 January 2013

RACE INFO:

Its January 2013 and time to start Leg 4 of SOL's race around Australia in memory of and tribute to SOLer AGage.

This is another IRL race run by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. Run in the last week of July each year, it has become an important race on the Australian calendar as it is the beginning of the late winter/spring circuit in the warmer northern waters of Australia. The fleet always consists of the top yachts: maxis, RP63s TP52s and the latest forty footers as well as classic and cruising divisions.

The course start and the journey up the harbour are the same as the Sydney to Hobart. When out through the Heads, turn left instead of right. A straight NNE course but the winds can be fickle. Also, IRL the yachts would have to deal with the East Australian Current (EAC). Sailors and oceanographers have known about the EAC but it was made famous by the Disney animation "Finding Nemo". A great conveyer belt for tropical fish wanting to visit Sydney but it means yachts heading north have to hug the coast to avoid its full force. Watch out for small islands along the course.

The race finish is off the Southport Seaway on Queensland's Gold Coast, the sun and surf holiday capital of Australia. The Gold Coast is a magnet for holiday makers and yachts alike. The host club, the Southport Yacht Club is one of the friendliest on the yachting circuit. It is a major stop off point for yachts heading to or returning from the Great Barrier Reef so you will find sailors from all over the world having a chat at the bar or out on the deck.

So join us on Leg4 of the A3 Series as we head to the warm, laid-back and friendly northern parts of Australia - January 8 @2000utc.

New Ice Age 2026 - Scott Base to Neumayer Station

To complete our DN circumnavigation of Antarctica and our 4-race ice-boat marathon series, we continue clockwise, now departing from Scott Base back to Neumayer Station. It’s about 3500nm back as well, which, as said if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Tenerife to Fernando de Noronha

The sixth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back up the Atlantic to Tenerife, from whence we will depart on a classic transatlantic passage to Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha. It’s 2150nm as the albatross flies, but you will undoubtedly have to take some and sometimes sudden detours to get your Volvo 70v4 through the doldrums stretching across your path from the Amazon to the Niger.
