26 February 2013

RACE INFO:

DUE TO THE SERVER OUTAGE ON SUNDAY, 24 FEBRUARY, THIS LEG IS BEING RESTARTED ON TUESDAY, 26 FEBRUARY SO WE CAN ALL GIVE 100% EFFORT TO THE FULL COURSE!
The A3 Series now gets into the warmer tropics of Australia as it is time for SOLers to set off on Leg 5 of SOL's race around Australia in memory of and tribute to SOLer AGage.

For most of this leg of the A3 we will be following the course of a IRL race, the Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race. Run by Tyger's old club, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, the Brisbane to Keppel Race has become a major feeder race for yachts going to Hamilton Island for Race Week. Once passed Keppel Bay, we will continue racing to Hamilton Island via the islands of the southern end of the Great Barriear Reef. The rounding mark at Keppel Bay is the finish line of the IRL race. Between Brisbane and Keppel Bay all marks are as stipulated in the Sailing Instructions of the IRL race. The reason for some of the marks may seem strange or not needed. However, IRL they have a purpose which is usually to keep yachts out of busy shipping channels and away from reefs. Most yachts and sailors will not be locals and not have "The Knowledge" so the marks are to make sure they stay safe. Many years ago a well known yachtsman from Sydney parked his Admiral's Cup yacht on the coral reef surrounding Lady Elliot Island. So the marks are to save embarrassment as well. Prevailing winds are SE and NE with occasional strong westerlies in late winter/early spring.

Our destination is Hamilton Island. Every year in the last week in August sailors from all over the world make their way to The Great Barrier Reef for Hamilton Island Race Week. Known downunder simply as "Hamo", the regatta has grown to be the largest offshore series on the Australian calendar. Bob Oatley, the owner of super-maxi Wild Oats XI, took over ownership of Hamilton Island in 2003 and developed it to its current state. Check it out: Hamilton Island Race Week

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!
