When SOLer FR_cirrus first proposed this race a while back, it seemed harmless enough and, in fact, had all the makings of a bit of fun - a quick weekend sailing in a circle! It proved to be all these things but add to it SOL's ability to bring "blue gloop" or windholes wherever we sail, and this turned into a real test of endurance. The circular and confined course did make DC-setting a little easier than usual and if our crew were in need of a bbq, then suitable spots were not too far off-course, for a change! Our winner coined the phrase "Manic Panic" and this is likely to be a name that will go into SOL's annals!

Our three podium-takers are to be truly commended for showing amazing skill in pulling off their top spots - just have a look at hmm's SOL Race Data Centre to see how it was achieved. BRAVO guys!!

ManicLac-2013

Knowing I would be travelling all day Sunday, I decided I’d start the manic race anyway. “In for a penny, in for a pound”. Not really my motto for life, but hey ho.

From the get-go we all knew it was all going to be about cornering aka BBQ-avoidance. As a learner-SOLer I am of the opinion, I can still improve on this. I have a tool to assist me, but, as this race proved, there are some real cornering-pro’s in our fleet, particularly one or two of direct descent. continued here

Regata dell’Accademia Navale 2026

Welcome to Sailonline’s partnership with the City of Livorno (Leghorn say the English) in cooperation with the local yacht clubs and the Italian Navy, offering all the online opportunity to race the famous Regata dell’Accademia Navale - 630nm in length. Starting and finishing in Livorno, this year the race takes you the length and breadth of the Tyrrhenian Sea via little Mortorio (Mortoriotto) off Sardinia to Capri and home again to Livorno. This race also counts towards Sailonline’s Magical Mediterranean Series and the SuperBuddy title. Online, you will be sailing a Mini 6.50, to give you a match against several of the real-life entrants, which you will be able to track on-screen!

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara


Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!

Falklands to Tasmania 2026

Welcome to yet another all-new route. This next race is part of our Ocean Championship as well as the ROW series. Falklands to Tasmania, is like last year's island to island. It’s one of the longer ones 6400nm, more than half way around the world (and the Antarctica). It starts the 2026 OCQ2, and will be sailed in our Steinlager 2, contrary to prior notice.
