GEFELICITEERD Tempest!!! FELICIDADES rafa!! PARABÉNS nacrr!

While many of us remain out in the Black Sea, SOL's first BMW Black Sea Virtual Race series draws to a close. Thanks to Yacht Club Romania and BMW Romania, SOLers have sailed in new waters. The competition has been fierce and the three SOLers who have won the Series Podium have shown exceptional skill and persistence in fighting off those chasing close behind. Well done guys! For his marvellous series win, appearing on the podium for each leg, Tempest wins a BMW chronograph from the special M collection.

See you in Varna next year!

LEG 3 PODIUM

CONGRATULAZIONI ghibli!!! GEFELICITEERD Tempest!! PARABÉNS nacrr!

The Black Sea seems a straightforward place to sail, but if it were that simple then SOL's Podium wouldn't have broken away from the fleet to win by a healthy margin. The conditions were fickle and shifty and only by sacrificing sleep was it possible to stay ahead. SOLing at its best! ghibli wins a BMW Yachtsport jacket and a baseball cap.

LEG 2 PODIUM

CONGRATULAZIONI WINSTON_4!!! FELICIDADES elbetico!! GEFELICITEERD Tempest!!

While many of us slept, top SOLers were heading for the finish in Leg 2. and again it was an extremely close finish, with less than a minute separating the podium (and many others hard on their heels!). Very well done guys. According to the rules, you now have until Saturday morning to sightsee and checkout the hospitality in Odessa! WINSTON_4 wins a pair of BMW Yachtsport sunglasses and a baseball cap.

Update: 30 May: Leg 3 will open for registration as soon as practicable after the Leg 2 winner's arrival, and will start racing at 0700utc on the day 48hrs after that finishing time. For example, if the winner of Leg 2 arrives in Sevastopol at 0300utc on Thursday then Leg 3 will open for registration as soon as practicable (subject to bunk time!) and will in any event start racing at 0700utc on Saturday, or if the Leg 2 winner arrives at 1300 on Thursday, then the Leg 3 start would be 0700utc on Sunday.

Update 29 May: Here are pictures of the real race from YCR!

LEG 1 PODIUM

FELICIDADES rafa!!! GEFELICITEERD Tempest!! CONGRATULATIONS Chila!

What a sprint that was! The light and fickle winds drove a hard bargain with the fleet and despite the last few nm being fairly consistent, it was a nailbiting finish! Well done! Rafa wins a pair of BMW Yachtsport deck shoes and a baseball cap!

You now have a small breather before Leg 2 opens for practice tomorrow, Sunday, 27 May (start 0700utc, Tuesday, 29 May)!!

Sailonline has been invited by Yacht Club Romania & Black Sea Offshore Sailing Association to set up the first ever virtual Black Sea Race to run in parallel with the real BMW Black Sea International Regatta 2012.

Starting on 26 May 2012, therefore, the first ever Black Sea Virtual Race will be powered by BMW!

We are very excited to announce that the three individual leg winners and the overall series winner will each receive special prizes from the BMW Yachtsport Collection donated by BMW Group Romania and Yacht Club Romania.

This is a very exciting new venture for Sailonline and we are delighted to have been chosen as the virtual platform for this combination real and virtual race.

Sailonline is also delighted to be invited to sail the brand new SOTO 30, only launched in May by Longitude Yachts in Thailand. Thanks to their connections, Yacht Club Romania has obtained current polar information for the SOTO 30 as well as permission for Sailonline to race it and our performance(s) may well find their way back to the yacht designers!!

Leg 1 of the three-race series will run concurrently with the real-life BMW Black Sea Race from Varna, Bulgaria to Mangalia, Romania.
Leg 2 will be: Mangalia - Serpent Island gate - Odessa / Ukraine - Sevastopol / Crimea
Leg 3 will be: Sevastopol - Yalta - Sochi / Russia - Batumi / Georgia - Trabzon / Turkey - Sinop gate - Istanbul

By the end of the SOL series we will have almost circumnavigated The Black Sea!

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, and for the sixth year in succession the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. This year, for the first time, we will be racing the 300nm circuit in Sun Fast 3200s. As usual, there is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this LO300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May, and this year also the race and the Susan Hood count towards the title of Super Buddy 2026; so, let the competition be fierce!

New Ice Age 2026 - Neumayer Station to Scott Base

For a second-half of long-distance ice-boating, we take our DNs to Antarctica for a circumnavigation of that continent in two legs clockwise, in harmony with the prevailing winds (such as there are), beginning with a race from Germany’s Neumayer Station to New Zealand’s Scott Base. It’s about 3500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
