SOL is honoured to be allowed to participate virtually in The Tall Ships Races 2011, presented by Szczecin, organised by Sail Training International. This year's races will be held in European waters. After having read about these beautiful historic ships and seen them in many movies and on television, throughout our lifetimes, SOLers can now 'sail' them and make navigational decisions in real weather! That will surely bring surprises while offering a total educational experience, both for sailors of modern boats and for 'wannabe' Salts of all ages. This experience runs parallel to Sail Training International's mission - the development and education of young people through the sail training experience, regardless of nationality, culture, religion, gender or social background. Both endeavours, Sail Training International and SOL, are Labours of Love, counting heavily on volunteer support with financial gain excluded from the equation. There are four classes in the real races, ranging from the biggest Class A Square Rigged ships of more than 40m in length, through to the smallest sloop. Sail Training International has provided SOL with the sailing characteristics of all four classes so SOL participants can choose the class of their choice. Subject to the whims of marine electronics, SOL expects to have at least one member from each real class displayed on our race screen, so you can race real ships as well as each other. SOL races will follow the real race schedule. Race One starts in Waterford, Ireland. It runs clockwise around that island, and ends in Greenock, Scotland. The Cruise-in-Company will be from Greenock to Lerwick in Shetland. Race Two will be from Shetland to Stavanger, Norway. Race Three then goes to Halmstad, Sweden. Once available, SOL will also have a link to the Tall Ships Racetracker, provided by Yellowbrick Tracking, which will follow all the real ships racing. newsartist and RainbowChaser ![Polars](http://www.sailonline.org/static/var/sphene/sphwiki/attachment/2011/06/25/TallshipPolars400.png) ************************

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!
