2 January 2011

UPDATE: 06jan11: 1100utc
Congratulations to the podium for Leg 1 - just seconds between them!!

_____________
UPDATE: 04jan11:1700utc:
AHOY SOL skippers - be aware that your boats will undergo a rapid refit during the stopover in the Straits of Gibraltar such that their performance will be optimised for Leg 2 and the remainder of SOL's Global Challenge.
Hopefully your crews will adapt well to the improvements!!
_____________
UPDATE: 02jan11:2015utc:
There are no ice gates in the SOL Global Challenge to give racers best navigational flexibility.
_____________
UPDATE: 02jan11:1030utc:
The SOL Global Challenge is a series of six races - for each leg there will obviously be podium places and those who gain these will be mentioned in the blog, but there will be an overall Global Challenge Series podium based on all six Leg results.
_____________
UPDATE: 31dec10: 1700utc:
There are six legs in SOL's Global challenge:
Leg 1 - Barcelona to the Straits of Gibraltar
Leg 2 - the Straits of Gibraltar to the Cape of Good Hope
Leg 3 - the Cape of Good Hope to Cook Strait, N.Z.
Leg 4 - Cook Strait to Cape Horn
Leg 5 - Cape Horn to the Straits of Gibraltar
Leg 6 - the Straits of Gibraltar to Barcelona
To maintain as great a continuity as possible, while being fair to everyone, each leg after Leg 1 will open for registration as soon as practicable after the previous leg winner's arrival and the new race will commence as close to 48hrs after that finishing time as is possible. For example, if the winner of Leg 2 arrives at the Cape of Good Hope finish at 0300utc then Leg 3 will open for registration as soon as possible (subject to SOLgods and goddesses bunk time!) and Leg 3 will begin racing at or very close to 0300utc +48hrs later.

The registration for each leg will close 24hrs after the leg starts.

Each leg will, subject to server loads, remain open for a few days after the winner arrives to permit as many to complete as possible. For those SYC Members who find legs closing before they finish, do not be too distressed as your position on the Leaderboard at race close will count as your ranking in that leg.

Update: Here is a nice clip from our friends at Hamnen.se (the first short presentation is in Swedish, the rest of the video is in english). N.B. the Brit skipper interviewed will not start the race as he has just had his appendix out but he will be joining the boat once he is fit (a stand-in skipper has been appointed)!:

Whether you are young or old, a well-seasoned sailor with ocean races under your belt or an inshore dinghy sailor, a landlubber with dreams of boating or just a SOLer who enjoys the navigational challenges that SOL brings, there are few among us who have not dreamed of sailing around the globe!

SOL is therefore delighted to offer all of you the chance to sail an IMOCA 60 around the world in six legs, with Leg 1, Barcelona to the Straits of Gibraltar, starting this weekend!

This will be a mighty undertaking but immense fun!! Let's face the world's oceans together!!

We look forward to seeing you at race start on 31 December 2010 @ 1200utc.

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!
